Firefighters Demand Fair Compensation Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Firefighters in South Korea are voicing their frustrations over inadequate compensation as they continue to face dangerous working conditions. A firefighter, identified as A, shared his experience after responding to the tragic Jeju Air incident at Muan Airport last December and battling wildfires in Gyeongbuk this March. He expressed pride in being a hero who saves lives but lamented the unfair treatment firefighters receive, particularly regarding their compensation.

A pointed out that the additional pay for responding to fires, set at 3,000 KRW (approximately $2.50), has not changed in over a decade, despite the increasing cost of living and the intensity of their work. He stated, "I still can't understand why the pay for responding to fires is only 3,000 KRW. If I wanted to earn a lot of money, I wouldn't have chosen to be a firefighter. This amount has remained the same for over ten years, which is a problem."

Despite working 31 hours straight during the recent wildfires, A received the same 3,000 KRW for his efforts. The current system for additional pay, known as the 'fire suppression and rescue operation allowance,' has been criticized for being insufficient compared to the demands placed on firefighters. The allowance, which was established in 2014, has not seen any adjustments since its inception.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Fire Agency have acknowledged the need for a review of the compensation system, with discussions about increasing the allowance to 4,000 KRW. However, no concrete actions have been taken yet.

Moreover, the transition of firefighters from local to national civil service status four years ago has not led to significant improvements in their working conditions. Many firefighters feel that their status is merely a facade, as local governments still control budgets and administrative decisions, leading to disparities in treatment across regions.

Concerns about inadequate equipment and resources persist, with firefighters reporting issues such as worn-out gloves and malfunctioning equipment. The lack of consistent funding and support from the government has left many feeling disillusioned.

As discussions about compensation continue, firefighters hope for real change rather than just promises. They emphasize the need for action to ensure their safety and fair treatment in the line of duty.
