Police Investigate Distribution of Explicit Material in Ulsan University Group Chat
An incident involving the distribution of explicit materials in a group chat for new students at Ulsan University has prompted a police investigation. On April 3, around 5 AM, over 40 explicit images and videos were shared in an online messenger group consisting of approximately 280 members. The materials included nude photos and videos of women, which were posted from the account of a freshman identified as Student B. The individual who uploaded the files left a message stating, 'I have many direct recordings. Message me privately if you want to see them.'
Upon discovering the situation, the student council immediately closed the group chat and reported the incident to the university's Human Rights Center. The university has since filed a complaint against Student B with the police, who are currently investigating the facts of the case.
Student B reportedly explained to the university that the incident occurred after losing their laptop about a month prior. The university is also looking into whether any of the victims are students at the institution.
Under South Korea's Sexual Violence Punishment Act, distributing illegal recordings can result in imprisonment for up to seven years or fines of up to five million won. Additionally, penalties under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes or the Information and Communications Network Act can lead to imprisonment for up to two years or fines of up to 20 million won.
