Korean Lawmakers Anticipate Dismissal of Presidential Impeachment Case
On April 4, as the Constitutional Court prepares to announce its ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol, his legal representative, Attorney Yoon Gap-geun, expressed hope for a wise decision from the judges. Entering the court around 10:24 AM, Yoon stated that the president acted within his constitutional authority to exercise emergency powers amidst a national crisis caused by the opposition and leftist factions. He emphasized that this argument was thoroughly presented during the impeachment proceedings and believed the judges understood the situation well. Yoon added that he would provide further comments after the ruling. When asked if he had received any messages from President Yoon, he replied, "I have not heard anything." Following the president's legal team, members of the ruling People Power Party (국민의힘) also visited the court, expressing their expectations for a dismissal of the case. Lawmaker Kim Gi-hyun stated, "I am confident that the Constitutional Court will dismiss the petition based on law, common sense, and due process principles." Fellow lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun remarked that the charge of insurrection cannot be substantiated and expressed hope for a fair and just ruling based on the constitution and law. Another member, Jo Bae-sook, noted that there had been various concerns regarding procedural legality and fairness, and she believed the court had adequately considered these issues. Park Dae-chul added that it has become legally clear that the emergency measures taken on December 3 do not constitute a violation of the constitution.
