Six Arrested in Connection with Deadly Banyan Tree Resort Fire in Busan

On February 14, a tragic fire at the Banyan Tree Resort construction site in Busan's Gijang-gun claimed the lives of six workers. In response, authorities have arrested six individuals, including the management of the construction company, Samjeong Corporation. On April 4, the Busan District Court's Eastern Branch issued arrest warrants for Chairman Park Jeong-o and CEO Park Sang-cheon of Samjeong Corporation, citing violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. Additionally, four others, including the site manager and representatives from subcontracting firms, were also detained on charges of violating industrial safety laws and negligent homicide. Investigations revealed that safety measures were severely lacking during the incident, as multiple workers were engaged in welding and cutting tasks without proper fire monitoring personnel in place. The court justified the arrests by highlighting the seriousness of the case and the potential for evidence tampering. This marks the third instance of a corporate executive being arrested under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, following previous incidents involving the Hwasung Arisell fire and the Yeongpung Seokpo Refinery arsenic leak.
