Korean History Instructor Reacts to Constitutional Court's Ruling on Former President Yoon's Impeachment
On April 4, 2025, Jeon Han-gil, a prominent Korean history instructor known for opposing the impeachment of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, expressed his surprise and acceptance of the Constitutional Court's ruling that upheld the impeachment. During a live broadcast on his YouTube channel, Jeon reacted emotionally as the court's decision was announced, striking his desk and covering his face in disbelief.
He stated, "I want to share my position. I am quite taken aback by this unexpected outcome." Jeon acknowledged the disappointment felt by supporters of Yoon, saying, "I feel that I have fallen short in representing those who have opposed the impeachment and advocated for the president's return to office. I am sorry and I apologize."
Jeon emphasized that the values he and his supporters pursued were not merely about the impeachment debate but about fostering national unity, protecting liberal democracy, and creating a society that respects the rule of law, fairness, and common sense. He insisted that their fight was for the nation, its people, and future generations, asserting that they have been sincere and honest in their pursuit of universal values.
Despite his acceptance of the court's decision, Jeon expressed his disagreement with the ruling's content, comparing it to the infamous Dred Scott decision in the United States, which denied rights to African Americans. He urged his followers to accept the ruling while also encouraging them to voice their criticisms of the court's decision.
"Today’s defeat is just a temporary setback," Jeon declared, calling for renewed efforts to ensure that conservative forces prevail in the upcoming early elections, thereby realizing a South Korea where liberal democracy, rule of law, and fairness thrive for future generations.
The Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment of former President Yoon, marking 122 days since he declared a state of emergency on December 3 and 111 days since the impeachment motion was filed on December 14 of the previous year.
