Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo to Announce Presidential Candidacy
Lee Cheol-woo, the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, is set to declare his candidacy for the presidential election on April 9 at 2 PM during a press conference at the National Assembly. His team announced on April 7 that he will share his reasons for running on that day.
On April 5, Lee expressed his concerns on Facebook, stating, "Are we just going to watch our country crumble?" He lamented the current state where proud conservative presidents of South Korea have been ousted, assassinated, imprisoned, or impeached, calling it a tragic reality. He urged everyone to rise and protect a first-class South Korea and democracy through the strength of the conservative movement, pledging to dedicate himself to leaving a proud nation for future generations.
Hailing from Gimcheon in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Lee began his career as an educator in Sangju and Uiseong before serving as the Director of the National Intelligence Service from 2001 to 2005. He later became the Vice Governor for Political Affairs in Gyeongsangbuk-do and was elected three times as a member of the National Assembly from his hometown of Gimcheon in 2008, 2012, and 2016. He has held various leadership roles, including spokesperson for the Saenuri Party, the predecessor of the People Power Party, and was elected as the 32nd Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do in 2018, successfully securing re-election in 2022.
