A Selfless Gift: Man Saves Six Lives Through Organ Donation

A 57-year-old man, Ban Jong-hak (반종학), who fell into a coma after collapsing on stairs, has given the ultimate gift of life through organ donation, saving six individuals. According to the Korea Organ Donation Agency, on December 15, 2024, at Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Ban donated his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and both corneas. Additionally, he contributed skin, bones, cartilage, and blood vessels, benefiting over 100 patients with functional disabilities.

Ban collapsed on December 11, 2024, while climbing the stairs at his home and was rushed to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, he did not regain consciousness. His children decided to proceed with the donation, believing their father would be pleased to help others in his final moments.

Born in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, Ban was the third of six siblings and was known for his kindness, often reaching out to those in need. He enjoyed fishing on weekends and was a caring father who loved cooking for his family.

For over 20 years, Ban worked as a carpenter, supporting his family. He often dealt with physical pain, using pain relief patches regularly. Although he was advised to undergo shoulder surgery, he declined due to concerns about being unable to work afterward. His family expressed sorrow that he could not grasp the railing when he fell, likely due to his painful shoulder.

His daughter, Hye-jin (혜진), fondly remembered, "Dad's red seaweed soup was the best." Just before the accident, Ban had suggested making kimchi together. After his passing, Hye-jin received a delivery of pickled cabbage at home, which reminded her of her father's words, and she couldn't bring herself to throw it away for a month.

Lee Sam-yeol (이삼열), the director of the Korea Organ Donation Agency, expressed gratitude for Ban Jong-hak's selfless act and the love shown by his family, stating, "The miracle of saving lives through organ donation will illuminate our society, making it healthier and brighter."
