Translator Hwang Seok-hee Shares Insights on AI Assistance in Translation

On the February 22 episode of MBC's entertainment program, 전지적 참견 시점 (The Manager's Perspective), translator Hwang Seok-hee revealed her daily life and how she utilizes AI in her translation work. During the show, Hwang shared that she frequently relies on AI tools, surprising the MCs with her openness. Her manager added that while AI is indeed helpful, the translations it provides cannot be used verbatim due to quality concerns. Instead, they serve as a supportive tool for interpretation.
Hwang mentioned that her monthly subscription for AI services costs around 150,000 KRW, explaining that different AI tools specialize in various tasks, such as research or discussions. She recounted an anecdote where she learned about humor in a conversation between two people, A and B. When B laughed at something A said, Hwang found it unfunny. After training the AI, she asked it why B laughed, and it explained that A's comment referenced a scene from a 1950s comic, highlighting the importance of context in understanding humor.
Hwang concluded by stating that AI is an incredibly useful tool for asking questions and receiving answers, emphasizing that she wouldn't want to return to a world without AI assistance.
