National Assembly Chairman Calls for Unanimous Impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol

On the morning of April 4, 2025, Jeong Cheong-rae, the Chairman of the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee, attended the Constitutional Court's ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol. He stated, "President Yoon must be removed by an 8-0 unanimous decision." Speaking to reporters at 10:14 AM, Jeong emphasized, "The unconstitutionality and illegality of President Yoon are known to both heaven and earth. The entire nation witnessed the insurrection live. Our Constitution mandates that even a sitting president must face consequences for committing insurrection."
He further argued, "Failing to punish today's crimes is akin to encouraging tomorrow's offenses. We must preemptively block future dictators and insurrection leaders by impeaching President Yoon." Jeong noted that the Constitutional Court is a product of the June Democratic Uprising of 1987, asserting that it is entirely justified for this institution, which protects democracy and the Constitution, to remove those who violate it. He expressed a heartfelt wish for the court to rule in favor of impeaching President Yoon, hoping that the anxieties and sleepless nights of the citizens advocating for his removal would not be in vain. He added, "I hope today’s ruling brings comfort to the citizens who have endured hardships and struggles."
The Constitutional Court is set to announce its ruling on President Yoon's impeachment trial at 11 AM. If at least six justices support the impeachment, President Yoon will be removed from office; otherwise, he will return to his duties.
