South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok Addresses Anti-Americanism Claims

On July 22, 2025, South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok delivered a keynote speech at a seminar hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea at the Conrad Seoul Hotel in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. During his address, he responded to allegations of anti-American sentiment, stating, "I believe such claims are quite outdated."
Reflecting on his past, Kim recalled his involvement in the 1980 U.S. Cultural Center occupation, where he raised concerns about U.S. support for military dictatorship in South Korea. He noted that this led to questions about whether he was anti-American, a label he rejected. Kim was sentenced to prison for his role in the 1985 incident.
He emphasized that if the U.S. views its relationship with South Korea through the lens of supporting a military dictatorship, that perspective is incorrect. He explained that during the December 3 military coup, the U.S. began to understand South Korea's position as a democracy and shifted its support to align with democratic values. Kim asserted that the U.S.-South Korea relationship has matured significantly since the 1980s, evolving into a true alliance based on democratic principles.
Kim also discussed the historical context of the so-called 'Third World' and 'colonial' theories, which suggested that South Korea could never escape U.S. influence. He pointed out that many South Koreans now have personal connections to the U.S., indicating a deep and intertwined relationship.
He highlighted the strategic importance of South Korea as a partner for the U.S. in the Pacific, noting its geographical position. Furthermore, he remarked on the potential for future relations with North Korea, suggesting that these could become an asset rather than a burden for both the U.S. and South Korea.
Kim concluded by stating that the U.S. becomes stronger when it collaborates with South Korea and expressed confidence in building a complementary relationship amid changing global economic and security dynamics. However, he refrained from discussing specifics regarding ongoing U.S.-South Korea tariff negotiations, indicating that many issues remain to be addressed.
After the seminar, Kim visited the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Korean Trade Union Congress, where he committed to establishing regular discussions and communication frameworks. He specifically mentioned the need for broad social consensus on current issues, including proposed amendments to labor laws, and emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue to address potential social conflicts.
