YouTuber '탈덕수용소' Loses Defamation Case Against BTS Members and Big Hit Music

On February 14, 2025, the Seoul Western District Court ruled in favor of BTS's agency, Big Hit Music, and members V (뷔) and Jungkook (정국) in a defamation lawsuit against YouTuber A, the operator of the channel '탈덕수용소'. The court ordered A to pay 10 million won to V, 15 million won to Jungkook, and 51 million won to Big Hit Music. A was known for creating and posting videos that spread malicious rumors about celebrities, including idols, amassing 80,000 subscribers and over 160 million views before shutting down the channel. This case is part of a broader legal response from various artists, including Jang Wonyoung, who initiated legal action in 2022. Starship Entertainment, representing Jang Wonyoung, pursued both civil and criminal charges, resulting in a 50 million won compensation ruling and a two-year prison sentence with a three-year probation for A. Additionally, Kang Daniel is also involved in ongoing legal battles against A for defamation related to false news posted on the channel. A was fined 10 million won and ordered to pay 30 million won in damages to Kang Daniel, who has since appealed the decision. SM Entertainment has also taken legal action against '탈덕수용소', with artists like Karina (카리나) and Suho (수호) filing complaints. The prosecution has requested a four-year prison sentence and a fine of over 211 million won for A, who has acknowledged the charges but claims the intent was not solely profit-driven. A has expressed remorse and is seeking to reach a settlement with the victims.
