A man in his twenties has been apprehended by the Gwangju Southern Police for allegedly stealing vehicles by luring owners with offers of free car washes. The suspect, identified as A, is accused of taking three cars from their owners in Gwangju's Seo-gu, Nam-gu, and Buk-gu districts over a three-day period starting May 12. He posted advertisements on a used goods trading app promising free car washes, but instead handed the vehicles over to a transport driver to be moved to different locations.

A attempted to resell the stolen cars to a used car dealer at prices significantly lower than market value, which raised suspicions and led the dealer to report him to the police. After a two-month investigation, authorities arrested A on July 8 at a residential area in Gwangju.

To evade capture, A frequently changed his accounts on the trading app, reportedly buying and selling accounts for between 50,000 to 150,000 KRW each. The police confirmed that he continued his criminal activities by using multiple accounts.

The plaintiffs argued that former Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae, who was responsible for overseeing correctional facilities, failed to implement timely measures for isolating confirmed cases and conducting thorough investigations despite the outbreak beginning in December 2020. They sought a total of 590 million won in damages, claiming emotional distress. 

The outbreak at Dongbu Detention Center began when the first inmate tested positive for COVID-19 on December 14, 2020. Following this, a comprehensive testing of both inmates and staff was conducted on December 18, revealing 185 positive cases among 2,844 individuals. The facility subsequently grouped these individuals in a common area for isolation. 

In its earlier ruling, the lower court acknowledged that the Ministry of Justice's response to the outbreak was somewhat lacking but concluded that the actions taken by Dongbu Detention Center were within a reasonable scope and did not constitute negligence. Thus, the court ruled against the plaintiffs.

On that day, Seol-young reunited with her siblings, So-young (소영) and Jae-young (재영), after 55 years apart. So-young, Bong Joon-ho's mother, often remarked that her son inherited his artistic sensibility from his grandfather. Seol-young, who had a career as an English professor at Pyongyang University of Mechanical Engineering until her retirement in 1997, shared her desire to see her nephew's films.

He was also a member of the literary group Kuunhoe, alongside poets such as Lee Sang (이상) and Kim Gi-rim (김기림).

In the aftermath of the Korean War, Park Taewon defected to North Korea, leaving behind his wife and five children. His family fled to the south during the 1.4 Retreat, but his eldest daughter, Seol-young, remained in Seoul and later followed her father to the North, resulting in a separation that lasted over fifty years.

After facing a ban on his work in 1956 due to political affiliations, Park was reinstated in 1960 and later remarried to Kwon Young-hee (권영희), a known figure in the literary community. He began writing 'The Peasant War of 1894' (갑오농민전쟁) in 1977, but due to blindness, his wife transcribed his dictations to complete the work.

Park Taewon’s death was reported by the Chosun Ilbo on July 13, 1986, marking a significant moment in the history of North Korean literature, as mentioning the names of defected writers was taboo at the time. It wasn't until two years later, on July 19, 1988, that the South Korean government officially lifted the ban on his works, allowing for the publication of his and other defected authors' literature.

In 2016, on the 30th anniversary of his passing, his eldest son, Il-young (일영), published a biography titled 'The Life of Mr. Kubo' (소설가 구보씨의 일생) to honor his father's legacy.

Sara Kim, known as one of the 'Three Drug Lords of Southeast Asia,' has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Suwon High Court, maintaining the original sentence from the first trial. On July 9, the court also mandated that Kim, 51, complete 80 hours of drug rehabilitation and pay a fine of approximately 690 million won for violating laws related to aggravated crimes. 

Kim was implicated in a drug trafficking network alongside Park, known as the 'Telegram Drug King,' and Choi, a North Korean defector who smuggled drugs from Cambodia into South Korea. He is believed to have been the mastermind behind the supply of drugs to both Park and Choi. 

Residing in Vietnam since 2018, Kim is accused of supplying drugs to South Korea until 2021. Investigations revealed that he used Telegram to conduct transactions with domestic suppliers, selling methamphetamine and synthetic cannabis, and even using drugs himself. Authorities estimate that Kim supplied enough drugs for around 100,000 users, valued at approximately 7 billion won. He was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City in July 2022 and subsequently deported to South Korea. 

During the appeal, the court noted the severity of Kim's actions, considering the methods, duration, frequency, and quantity of drugs involved, as well as the illegal profits made. However, the court acquitted him of a specific charge related to injecting methamphetamine into an acquaintance's ankle, citing a lack of credible evidence. 

Additionally, Kim's son, who was initially sentenced to five years for assisting his father, was found not guilty. The court acknowledged that the son claimed he was unaware of the drugs in the package he transported and that there was no evidence of communication regarding drug trafficking between him and his father prior to the package's arrival in South Korea.
