Yook Sungjae and Kim Jiyeon Star in New Fantasy Romantic Comedy 'Gwigung'

Actors Yook Sungjae (육성재) and Kim Jiyeon (김지연) are set to lead the cast of the upcoming fantasy romantic comedy 'Gwigung' (귀궁), generating excitement for SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama. On March 6, SBS released images from the script reading session featuring the main cast.

'Gwigung', written by Yoon Soo-jung (윤수정) and directed by Yoon Sung-sik (윤성식), tells the story of a shaman named Yeori (김지연) who rejects her fate as a medium, and her first love, Yoon Gap (육성재), who is trapped in the body of a mythical serpent, Gangcheol. The plot thickens as they become entangled with a vengeful spirit seeking revenge against the royal family.

The collaboration between director Yoon Sung-sik, known for works like 'Mr. Queen' (철인왕후) and 'The Great King Sejong' (최고다 이순신), and writer Yoon Soo-jung, who penned 'The King's Face' (왕의 얼굴) and 'Bold and Beautiful' (발칙하게 고고), has garnered attention for its strong cast, including Yook Sungjae, Kim Jiyeon, Kim Ji-hoon, and special guest Kim Young-kwang (김영광).

During the script reading, the actors displayed an impressive level of immersion, bringing the drama's atmosphere to life. Notably, Yook Sungjae, despite this being his first historical drama, adeptly portrayed the contrasting personalities of the warm-hearted Yoon Gap and the ancient evil spirit Gangcheol, effectively embodying two roles.

Kim Jiyeon also delivered a nuanced performance, capturing the strength and delicacy of Yeori's emotions, particularly in her complex feelings towards Yoon Gap and the possessed Gangcheol.

The chemistry between Yook Sungjae and Kim Jiyeon promises to enhance the drama's appeal, as they navigate comedic banter and the budding romance between their characters. Viewers are eager to see how their first love and complicated past will unfold.

Kim Ji-hoon plays the fictional king Lee Seong, showcasing strong leadership as he faces political intrigue for the sake of his country and people, while also displaying a touching paternal love to protect his family.

The cast also includes seasoned actors such as Gil Hae-yeon, Kim In-kwon, Son Byung-ho, Han Soo-yeon, Han So-eun, Shin Seul-ki, Lee Won-jong, and Jo Han-kyul, all contributing to the drama's depth and engagement.

The production team expressed confidence in the script's tight structure and the actors' fantastic chemistry, stating that 'Gwigung' will captivate viewers with its fresh take on the fantasy romantic comedy genre. The new SBS drama is set to premiere in April.
