On June 25, President Lee Jae-myung addressed concerns regarding the law school (로스쿨) system during a town hall meeting at the National Asia Culture Center (국립아시아문화전당) in Gwangju. He acknowledged that there are issues with the current pathway for training legal professionals, stating, "I personally resonate with some of the criticisms regarding the law school system being inadequate." 

During the event, an attendee pointed out that only graduates from law schools can become lawyers, suggesting that only those from affluent backgrounds can afford to attend these institutions. In response, President Lee remarked, "It's not easy to discuss this as an official agenda. It is indeed a challenging topic," while encouraging further examination of the issue.

He also mentioned that discussions about reinstating the bar exam had arisen during a lunch prior to the meeting, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding the training of legal professionals. He expressed concern that the law school system might resemble the historical 음서제, a system from the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties that favored certain social classes in appointing officials.

President Lee noted, "Given that the law school system has been established for a long time, abolishing it would not be simple. However, should the only path to becoming a lawyer be through law school? If someone has the skills, shouldn't there be a way to validate their qualifications without attending law school?" He acknowledged that while he holds these views, the topic is complex and could spark significant public debate.

In the 2022 presidential election, President Lee had promised to revive the bar exam, suggesting that while law schools should remain, there should be opportunities for those who may not have completed secondary education but possess the necessary skills to become lawyers. The bar exam was abolished in 2017, and currently, only law school graduates are eligible to take the bar exam.

In a recent survey conducted by the 대학내일20대연구소, Korean teenagers identified 'wealth' as the most crucial factor for happiness, surpassing family and friends. The study, which involved 800 participants aged 14 to 18 from 17 cities across South Korea, was carried out from March 21 to April 2, 2025. 

According to the findings, 52.1% of respondents believe that wealth is essential for happiness, followed by parents (39.5%), close friends (34.6%), rest and relaxation (32.8%), appearance (32.1%), hobbies and interests (30.8%), and life goals and dreams (30.3%). 

Interestingly, female respondents showed a higher tendency to emphasize various factors contributing to happiness compared to their male counterparts. However, when it came to the importance of having a romantic partner, male respondents (26.9%) outnumbered females (18.6%). 

The survey also revealed that students with lower academic performance are more likely to view life goals (36.5%) and home ownership (30.0%) as vital for happiness. Among those from lower economic backgrounds, mental strength (31.0%) was notably highlighted. 

Many teenagers expressed skepticism about upward mobility in wealth by the age of 30. Those from higher-income families predicted they would remain in upper (13.0%) or upper-middle (35.6%) classes, while 61.2% of those from middle-income families expected to maintain their current status. Conversely, lower-income respondents anticipated remaining in the middle (42.5%) or lower-middle (38.5%) classes. 

The perception of social class was closely linked to academic performance. About 49.1% of students with above-average grades expected to be in the upper-middle class or higher by age 30, while 40.0% of those with below-average grades predicted they would fall into the lower-middle class or below. 

Regarding career aspirations outside of college, 42.3% of respondents expressed interest in starting their own business, while 36.9% considered becoming influencers, though neither figure reached half of the total respondents. Notably, those from higher economic backgrounds (51.0%) and with better academic performance (48.6%) showed significantly higher entrepreneurial intentions. The research suggests that family economic status and academic success play a crucial role in shaping teenagers' future opportunities and self-confidence.

The chairman of the Seoul Taxi Transportation Business Association, Cha Mo (차모), aged 72, was arrested by police on June 23 for allegedly engaging in monetary transactions in exchange for appointments to association-related positions. Following his arrest, he hired two attorneys from a major law firm and filed a request for a review of the legality of his detention, which is set to be heard on June 26 at the Seoul Central District Court. Cha has reportedly denied the allegations regarding the trading of positions.

Witnesses within the association have claimed that Cha has wielded unchecked power for over a decade, often referred to as the 'Taxi King.' The closed-off power structure of the association, combined with a lack of oversight, has allegedly allowed him to engage in nepotism and favoritism.

According to our investigation, suspicions arose last June that Cha used his position as chairman to facilitate monetary exchanges related to appointments within the association. In April of the same year, over 340 members formed a group called the 'Association Reform Group' and submitted complaints to various government bodies, including the presidential office and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, alleging that Cha was soliciting bribes in exchange for job placements.

In October, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's special investigation unit conducted searches at the association's headquarters in Songpa District and at Cha's residence, reportedly uncovering bundles of cash amounting to several hundred million won. Authorities suspect that this money may have been received by Cha in return for granting favors to association members.

Several members have recently testified to the police that Cha demanded money in exchange for appointments within the association. The police have reportedly gathered some statements regarding the amounts requested. However, Cha has claimed that the cash found was not related to bribes but rather proceeds from a real estate sale. His attorney stated that it would be inappropriate to disclose specific positions ahead of the review of his detention.

The Seoul Taxi Association is the largest organization representing individual taxi drivers in South Korea, with approximately 49,074 members as of February. Each member pays a monthly fee of 20,000 won, contributing to an annual budget of around 15 billion won. Due to restrictions on the number of taxi licenses issued by local governments, new drivers must obtain licenses from departing drivers, a process managed by the association. Members have expressed that, despite being independent operators, they cannot operate without the association's approval, highlighting its significant influence.

Cha, who obtained his taxi license in 1986, has held various positions within the association, including delegate in 1998 and head of the Gangnam branch in 2002, before becoming chairman in 2005. The association's bylaws state that the chairman can serve only one additional term, yet Cha has reportedly been re-elected multiple times through by-elections, serving a total of 15 years.

The chairman holds considerable power within the association, including the authority to discipline members, which can include expulsion. One taxi driver remarked that the chairman essentially controls their livelihoods. The chairman's annual salary is reported to be between 130 million and 140 million won, with an additional operational budget of around 50 million won.

As the construction industry faces downturns and domestic demand weakens, many baby boomer retirees are entering the taxi industry, further increasing the association's influence. The value of taxi licenses has risen significantly, from 93.81 million won in the second half of 2023 to over 100 million won last month.

A representative from the Seoul Taxi Association noted that the chairman can appoint over twenty key positions without any formal decision-making process, and when including various positions that come with allowances for attending meetings, the total exceeds one hundred.

In 2021, several officials from the Seoul Taxi Association were indicted for fraudulently claiming vehicle repair costs, while in 2023, it was revealed that officials received bribes for directing work to specific companies. Internally, there are calls for the government to implement oversight mechanisms, as the association, originally established to protect the rights of individual taxi drivers, is perceived to operate in a closed and authoritarian manner.

The incident occurred on June 8 around 2 PM when Lee mistakenly drove another person's vehicle of the same make as his own from a golf practice range in Gangnam, Seoul. The mix-up happened when a parking attendant incorrectly handed over the keys, and Lee returned to the scene after realizing his personal belongings were not in the car.

However, the owner of the vehicle reported it as a suspected theft, prompting police to conduct breath and drug tests at the scene. The drug test returned a positive result, leading to a more thorough investigation. In response, Lee explained during police questioning that the results were likely influenced by his prescribed medication for panic disorder and cold medicine. He confirmed that he had received a prescription for cold and flu medication from a pharmacy within the golf facility and that he has been taking psychiatric medication for over ten years, which may have affected the test results.

Despite this, police have stated that even if the medications were prescribed, if they impair driving ability, it could still fall under the category of drug-impaired driving according to traffic laws. Current traffic regulations explicitly prohibit driving under conditions that impair normal operation, which includes not only alcohol but also the consumption of medications or substances that can diminish cognitive or physical coordination.

On June 16, the acting chief of the Seoul Police, 박현수 (Park Hyun-soo), mentioned in a press conference that Lee is currently in the pre-charge investigation phase and that the National Forensic Service has been asked to analyze the substances involved. The police plan to closely examine the concentration and types of drugs that could potentially affect driving based on the forensic analysis results.

Kang Ho-dong, Son Heung-min, and G-Dragon are currently models for a South Korean financial group. Previously, Kang Ho-dong and Son Heung-min had been working as models separately before G-Dragon joined the campaign. They conducted their first joint shoot today in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. 

Additionally, singer Im Young-woong is also a model for the same brand campaign, but he did not participate in this shoot. 

Meanwhile, Kang Ho-dong is set to release a new original variety show on Tving titled 'Escape: The Story' (대탈출: 더 스토리). This show promises to expand its scale with new escape artists and a more intricate storyline, serving as a spin-off of the popular series 'Escape' (대탈출). The premiere is scheduled for July 23 on Tving.
