Yoo Jae-suk Addresses Negative Comments on Toy Hospital

On the March 5 episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' (유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭), host Yoo Jae-suk took a moment to respond to negative comments directed at the Toy Hospital. The episode featured guests Kim Jong-il, the chairman known as 'Grandpa Zepeto,' and Dr. Won Deok-hee.

Kim Jong-il, who worked as a university professor before retirement, shared that the Toy Hospital is staffed by 12 doctors, which surprised the audience. Yoo Jae-suk expressed admiration, stating, "That's truly a life of three careers!"

Dr. Won Deok-hee explained that the Toy Hospital serves both children and the elderly, coining the term 'Kinesis' to reflect this dual focus. Kim Jong-il emphasized the importance of experience, stating, "We can't just hand over toys to anyone; volunteers need at least six months of experience. However, anyone with a willingness to serve can apply." The Toy Hospital operates on a volunteer basis without any compensation.

He also mentioned that while they provide lunch for volunteers, the increasing number of participants has led to higher costs, but they have received donations since gaining more visibility.

Dr. Won Deok-hee shared a personal story, revealing that he went straight to the Toy Hospital after undergoing bladder cancer surgery. He expressed his eagerness to return, saying, "I felt bored after being discharged. I wanted to fix toys for the kids. I love what I do, so I didn't even feel the pain."

He recounted how his doctor suggested that paint-related substances might have contributed to his cancer, but he was fortunate to have caught it early and received prompt treatment.

Kim Jong-il noted that the best reward they receive is the gratitude expressed on their feedback board, but he also mentioned that some toys cannot be repaired, leading to harsh comments from some individuals. He requested that people be more understanding in such cases.

Yoo Jae-suk added, "It’s understandable to feel upset when something can’t be fixed. They are making an effort, and mutual understanding is essential."
