Yong Hye-in Calls for Expulsion of Choi Hyuk-jin from Democratic Party

Yong Hye-in, the leader of the Basic Income Party, has labeled Choi Hyuk-jin, a former social economy secretary under the Moon Jae-in administration, a "political fraud" and is urging the Democratic Party to expel him. This follows Choi's failure to honor his commitment to rejoin the Basic Income Party after being elected as a proportional representative candidate in the last general election. On June 4, Yong expressed her disappointment on Facebook, stating that the news of Choi's succession brought her more joy than her own election victory. She had believed he would return to the Basic Income Party and fulfill his promises to its members and the public. However, Choi's response was merely that he intended to remain with the Democratic Party. Yong criticized this as an unacceptable act of stealing a party seat, emphasizing that it undermines democratic party order and labeling Choi as a thief and a political fraud. She announced that the Basic Income Party has withdrawn its recommendation for Choi as a proportional representative and called for his immediate expulsion from the Democratic Party, asserting that it is only right to give the opportunity to the 17th candidate recommended by civil society. Yong hopes that the Democratic Party will not become complicit in Choi's betrayal of the public and Basic Income Party members. In the 2024 general election, the opposition coalition, including the Democratic Party, Progressive Party, and Basic Income Party, formed a new alliance called the New Progressive Alliance, which led to the election of 14 candidates under a semi-proportional representation system. Choi was ranked 16th on the list, while Son Sol, a former spokesperson for the Progressive Party, was ranked 15th. Both Choi and Son were recently appointed to significant positions by President Lee Jae-myung, with Choi taking over a proportional representative seat. Following the merger of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Union, both Choi and Son are currently affiliated with the Democratic Party. Son is expected to return to the Progressive Party, which would increase its seats to four, making it the fourth-largest party in the National Assembly after the Democratic Party, People Power Party, and Justice Party.
