YB's Yoon Do-hyun Reveals Metal Music Helped Him During Cancer Battle

On February 17, 2025, Yoon Do-hyun, the lead vocalist of the band YB, shared that he primarily listened to metal music during his battle with cancer. This revelation came during a showcase for YB's new metal album, 'ODYSSEY(오디세이)', held at Rolling Hall in Hongdae, Seoul, to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. The event was hosted by music critic Lim Jin-mo.
The new EP 'ODYSSEY' is set to be released on February 26, marking the band's first EP in nine years since 'Remind' in 2016, and their first album in six years following the release of their tenth studio album, 'Twilight State', in 2019.
Yoon Do-hyun previously shocked fans with the news of his diagnosis of a rare type of lymphoma, known as Wimal lymphoma, in 2021, and he recently announced that he has been declared cancer-free. Despite his health struggles, he continued to host radio shows and perform in concerts and musicals, which left many in awe.
During the showcase, the first track 'Voyeurist' was introduced, which Yoon explained carries a negative connotation and reflects themes of extreme pain. He described it as a modern metal song that addresses society's fluctuating need for attention.
After the listening session, Lim Jin-mo expressed surprise at the release of a metal album by Yoon Do-hyun, questioning the sudden shift and whether he could pull off the metal genre. Yoon responded, stating that his interest in metal music was rekindled during his illness and the pandemic, as it provided him with strength and a sense of transcendence.
When Lim raised concerns about the dangers of metal music, Yoon humorously noted that while doctors advised against alcohol and smoking, they never told him to stop listening to metal. He initially considered the project as a solo endeavor but decided to collaborate with his bandmates, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
YB's new album 'ODYSSEY' will be available for streaming and purchase on February 26 at 6 PM.
