WINNER's Song Min-ho Faces Controversy Over Mental Health Claims

Song Min-ho of the K-pop group WINNER is reportedly facing a crisis that could liken him to the infamous case of Yoo Seung-jun. The singer has been open about his struggles with panic disorder and bipolar disorder, but his recent explanations have sparked backlash, with some netizens accusing him of being insincere.
According to A, the director of a community service facility where Song Min-ho is serving, the artist was classified as eligible for early discharge due to severe mental health issues. However, he chose to endure the pain to fulfill his service obligations while continuing his entertainment activities. A stated, "Living a normal life is difficult for him. I understand he is currently hospitalized due to psychological distress and has had troubling thoughts in the past."
A also denied allegations of collusion and manipulation regarding Song Min-ho's attendance records, asserting that all records were maintained according to the Military Manpower Administration's guidelines. After A's transfer to a new position, Song Min-ho faced adjustment issues, which contributed to his request for a change in work location due to his mental state.
In March 2022, Song Min-ho appeared on Channel A's 'Oh Eun-young's Golden Counseling Center,' revealing that he had been suffering from panic attacks since 2017, which led to frequent hospital visits.
Despite his struggles, public sentiment remains skeptical. Many netizens point out that since the onset of his panic disorder in 2017, he has successfully participated in various entertainment programs such as 'New Journey to the West' (신서유기), 'I Live Alone' (나혼자산다), and 'Kang's Kitchen' (강식당), as well as concerts and events. They find it hard to believe that his panic disorder only affects him during work hours, especially after he traveled to Hawaii for six days shortly after his military enlistment.
Critics have mockingly referred to his condition as 'selective panic disorder,' suggesting that if allegations of inadequate service or attendance manipulation are proven true, he should face consequences similar to those faced by Yoo Seung-jun. Some have even suggested that if his situation is as severe as claimed, he should consider retirement.
On December 17, Song Min-ho was embroiled in allegations of attendance manipulation and inadequate service. The following day, rumors of a romantic relationship with actress Park Joo-hyun surfaced.
In response, his agency, YG Entertainment, stated, "We cannot confirm the artist's private matters," but clarified that his sick leave was for treatment and that all other leave was taken in accordance with regulations.
The Military Manpower Administration has begun an investigation, securing CCTV footage from his workplace and requesting Song Min-ho to submit documentation to clarify the situation. Additionally, police have received complaints regarding potential violations of military service laws and have initiated inquiries, including a request to preserve CCTV footage from the facility.
