Winner's Song Min-ho Faces Allegations of Inadequate Military Service

Song Min-ho of the K-pop group Winner is under scrutiny for alleged inadequate military service. On December 17, accusations surfaced that he failed to properly report to his assigned duty at the Mapo Community Service Center and manipulated his attendance records. In response, his agency, YG Entertainment, stated, "We cannot provide detailed information regarding the artist's service. However, the sick leave was taken in accordance with regulations, and the reason was an extension of treatment received prior to service." The facility also confirmed that he served according to the rules.

Song Min-ho began his military service in March 2023 but attended his brother's wedding in the U.S. just a month later. During the ceremony, he walked down the aisle holding his brother's hand, raising eyebrows as he maintained a long hairstyle that would have been prohibited had he been in basic training. YG clarified that he left the country through official channels and was classified as exempt from basic military training by the Military Manpower Administration.

However, further controversy arose when photos of him with dyed long hair surfaced in April, leading to public backlash regarding his military service. The Military Manpower Administration is currently investigating the allegations of attendance manipulation.

Song Min-ho is not the only artist facing scrutiny. Ravi, formerly of VIXX, was found to have faked epilepsy to receive military exemptions and was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation. He is set to face a retrial after the prosecution appealed the decision. Additionally, Nafla, a rapper under Ravi's label Groovlin, was also sentenced to one year and two months in prison for attempting to evade military service by claiming depression.

Former BIGBANG member T.O.P was discharged from his position in the police military service after being caught smoking marijuana and later began community service. He has been accused of taking significantly more sick leave than his peers without providing necessary medical documentation.

In 2013, singer Seven faced controversy for visiting a massage parlor while serving as an entertainment soldier.

Amid these controversies, some stars are being recognized for their exemplary military service. Taecyeon of 2PM, who moved to the U.S. in 2000 and obtained permanent residency, voluntarily gave up his status to enlist in the military in 2010. Despite being classified as unfit for service due to a herniated disc, he underwent multiple surgeries to serve actively, earning praise for his commitment.

BTS (방탄소년단), recognized for their contributions to promoting South Korea globally, were discussed in the National Assembly regarding potential alternative service or exemptions. However, the group declined any special treatment and chose to enlist, with Jin leading the way by canceling his enlistment deferment. The members have since begun their military service, with many achieving early promotions and commendations for their dedication.
