Winner's Image Affected by Song Min-ho's Service Controversy

The K-pop group Winner is facing backlash following allegations regarding member Song Min-ho's inadequate military service. On December 17, reports surfaced claiming that Song Min-ho manipulated his attendance records while serving as a social service worker. According to Dispatch, after enjoying a six-day trip to Hawaii in October, he failed to return to his duties as expected. The outlet noted that during visits to his assigned location, the Mapo Community Service Center, in the second week of November and early December, Song Min-ho was reportedly absent on at least ten occasions. Witnesses claimed he would occasionally appear to smoke a cigarette, sign in, and then leave shortly after. When contacted for verification, the responsible party cited reasons such as 'sick leave,' 'annual leave,' and 'hospitalization,' but refused to provide specific evidence, citing privacy concerns.
In response to the growing controversy, the Military Manpower Administration has initiated an investigation into the allegations surrounding Song Min-ho's attendance and record manipulation. His agency, YG Entertainment, stated, "We cannot confirm detailed information regarding the artist's service. However, the reasons for sick leave are extensions of treatment received prior to service, and all other leaves were taken in accordance with regulations."
Despite this clarification, public sentiment remains negative. Song Min-ho has previously faced scrutiny for maintaining a long hairstyle and growing facial hair, leading to accusations of privilege and calls for him to re-enlist.
Additionally, discussions have arisen regarding the military service of other Winner members. The group's youngest member and leader, Kang Seung-yoon, enlisted in June of last year and has been serving diligently in the Army's 6th Infantry Division. In contrast, fellow members Kim Jin-woo and Lee Seung-hoon completed alternative service as social service workers, raising further questions. While the specific reasons for their 4th-grade military evaluations have not been disclosed, it is known that Kim Jin-woo suffers from asthma, and Lee Seung-hoon has injuries to his shoulder and knee. Song Min-ho has also previously spoken about his struggles with panic disorder and bipolar disorder. This has led to online criticism, with netizens questioning how three out of four members can have health issues yet still participate in activities, and expressing disbelief that someone with panic disorder could travel abroad.
