Victim of Domestic Violence Shares Trauma on 'Ask Anything' Show
In a recent episode of KBS Joy's 'Ask Anything' (무엇이든 물어보살), a guest appeared alongside her aunt to discuss the psychological trauma she has endured due to domestic violence and a history of abuse. The guest revealed that her mother passed away when she was in her early twenties, and she has been struggling with the effects of childhood abuse ever since, seeking psychiatric treatment to cope.
When asked about her father, she shared that her family situation is complicated, having had four stepfathers, with her biological father being completely unknown to her. The guest explained that her relationships with her siblings are also intricate; her first stepfather had children, but one half-sibling was sent away without knowledge of their biological mother, while another half-sibling from her third stepfather returned to their biological father after living with her aunt.
She recounted how her second stepfather, whom she believed to be her real father, protected her from her mother's abuse, but when he was absent, she faced neglect and was often left without food.
The situation worsened when her mother divorced her second husband and moved in with a new partner, who subjected her to severe mistreatment. The guest recalled a chilling incident where, during a cold winter night, her mother's partner took her to the rooftop in only her underwear as punishment.
After marrying her third husband and having another child, her mother began to discriminate against and abuse her further, even sending her to an orphanage unexpectedly. The guest described the moment she was taken to a temporary shelter, where she felt abandoned.
Despite her efforts to return home by promising to help with household chores, the abuse continued, leading her to experience severe depression and anxiety. Tragically, her mother passed away suddenly at the age of 39, prompting her aunt to take her in. However, upon moving in with her aunt, she began to exhibit symptoms of mental illness, including schizophrenia and depression, which have only intensified over the years, now including dissociative amnesia.
The heartbreaking story highlights the long-lasting impact of domestic violence and the struggle for recovery.
