Upcoming Film 'Yadang' Explores the Dark World of Drug Trafficking

The film 'Yadang' (야당), directed by Hwang Byeong-guk, held its production briefing on March 13 at the Megabox COEX in Seoul. The event featured lead actors Kang Ha-neul, Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-joon, Ryu Kyung-soo, and Chae Won-bin, along with director Hwang.
'Yadang' is a crime action film that delves into the underbelly of South Korea's drug trade, focusing on a broker named Lee Kang-soo (played by Kang Ha-neul), who sells information about drug offenders to national law enforcement. Yoo Hae-jin portrays a prosecutor, Koo Kwan-hee, who aspires to rise through the ranks, while Park Hae-joon plays a dedicated detective, Oh Sang-jae, committed to eradicating drug crime. Ryu Kyung-soo takes on the role of Jo Hoon, the son of a presidential candidate, and Chae Won-bin plays Um Soo-jin, an actress who falls from grace due to drug use.
Director Hwang explained that the term 'Yadang' is not related to political parties but is a term used in the world of drug trafficking, originally derived from pickpocketing slang. He noted that the film aims to portray the complex relationships and motivations of its characters, who are all intertwined in the drug trade.
Hwang, who is also an actor, is returning to directing after 14 years since his last project, 'Special Investigation Unit.' He shared that the inspiration for 'Yadang' came from an article he read in 2021 about drug offenders exchanging information daily at the National Police Agency, which sparked his interest in creating a film around such characters.
Kang Ha-neul expressed his initial surprise at the film's title, thinking it was politically themed, but was captivated by the script's engaging structure. Yoo Hae-jin found the film's unique subject refreshing, while Park Hae-joon was drawn to the intriguing premise of the story.
Hwang emphasized the film's focus on rhythm and pace, encouraging actors to deliver their lines quickly to enhance the film's dynamic feel. He also conducted research at a drug rehabilitation center, where he was shocked to learn about the severe impact of drug use on individuals, including low IQ levels among users.
'Yadang' is set to be released on April 23, 2025, following Kang Ha-neul's appearance in another film, 'Streaming,' earlier in March. He expressed gratitude for the timing of both releases, hoping audiences will appreciate both films.
As the film industry faces challenges, Kang Ha-neul remarked that he does not believe his participation will resolve these issues but hopes for the emergence of quality films that resonate with viewers.
Mark your calendars for the release of 'Yadang' on April 23, 2025!
