UNIS returns with a Sweet and Spicy Twist in New Album 'SWICY'

The K-pop group UNIS has made a vibrant comeback, showcasing their sweet and spicy charm with the release of their second mini-album, 'SWICY'. The group held a showcase on April 15 at the YES24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, to celebrate the album's launch and share insights about their new music.

After their debut single 'CURIOUS' released last August, UNIS is back just eight months later, expressing their excitement: "We are thrilled to finally make our comeback. We have worked hard on this album, and we hope everyone enjoys the title track and the songs included, which embody our unique 'swicy' appeal."

The members, who recently celebrated their first anniversary, reflected on their journey: "It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since our debut showcase here. We are grateful to be busy traveling between Korea and abroad."

The term 'SWICY' combines 'Sweet' and 'Spicy', representing a musical expression of the global trend that harmonizes these contrasting flavors. Member Oh Yoon-ah emphasized that the new album represents a significant change, stating, "This transformation itself is our distinguishing feature. We believe this album will showcase our unique swicy charm in K-pop."

The title track 'SWICY' captures the essence of the group's 'spicy-sweet' appeal, featuring a catchy melody, addictive chorus, and lyrics that blend cuteness with bold emotions, creating a delightful contrast.

Member Lim Seo-won described the song as a metaphor for UNIS's sweet and spicy charm, using straightforward language that resonates with Gen Z. When asked about their unique 'swicy' identity, she noted, "We have a sweet image, but our stage presence brings a spicy twist."

Jin Hyun-joo added, "While we may appear sweet, our growth has been quite spicy. This comeback has made our practice sessions even more dynamic and exciting."

When asked about their favorite 'swicy' Korean dish, member Elisia mentioned gimbap, highlighting its variety of toppings and flavors. Nana shared her love for tteokbokki, recalling how her members made a sweeter version for her, calling it their 'swicy' creation.

Looking ahead, UNIS is planning an Asia tour in the first half of the year. Jin Hyun-joo expressed disbelief at the prospect of touring, saying, "I’ve never truly felt the love we receive worldwide, so I’m excited to meet our fans during this tour. I can’t wait!" Kotoko echoed this sentiment, sharing her dream of meeting fans from various countries, while Nana expressed her joy about performing in her home country, Japan.

Finally, UNIS aims to earn the title of 'the representative of sweet and spicy' in K-pop, stating, "We want to be the first group that comes to mind when people think of 'swicy'. We also hope to achieve first place on all music shows during this promotion. Last year, we set a goal to win a music show, and while we received many awards, we haven’t achieved that yet. It would mean a lot to us to accomplish that this time around."
