Trump Returns to the U.S., Cancels Planned U.S.-Korea Summit

On June 17, the South Korean presidential office announced that the planned summit between South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump was canceled after Trump unexpectedly returned to the United States on June 16. National Security Office Director Wi Sung-lak stated during a briefing that the sudden return of President Trump made the scheduled meeting difficult, suggesting that it was likely related to the military conflict between Israel and Iran. Wi noted that the U.S. had reached out to request understanding regarding the situation. Despite the cancellation, the presidential office clarified that it was not considered a breach of protocol, explaining that the U.S. made a hasty decision and only communicated the change shortly before it occurred. President Lee reportedly did not show any particular reaction upon receiving the news of the summit's cancellation. The meeting was intended to address the upcoming high tariffs set to take effect next month, and it was also reported that leaders from other countries, including Australia, were coordinating meetings with Trump. The presidential office expressed intentions to reschedule the U.S.-Korea summit at the earliest opportunity, with a potential meeting between President Lee and Trump during the NATO summit in The Hague on June 24-25. Wi also confirmed that a summit with Japan is set for the afternoon of June 18, with specific timing still being arranged.
