Trot Legend Song Dae-kwan Passes Away at 78

The beloved trot singer Song Dae-kwan (송대관) has tragically passed away at the age of 78 due to a sudden heart attack while hospitalized. His agency confirmed the news, stating that he had been admitted for health concerns but had no known chronic illnesses. The announcement came at around 10 AM on February 7, 2025.

In a statement, a representative shared, "Song Dae-kwan was not known to have any underlying health issues. He had recently been feeling unwell and was hospitalized, but he unexpectedly succumbed to a heart attack. We are currently preparing a detailed statement and making arrangements for his funeral to honor his memory."

Fellow artist Hyun-sook (현숙) expressed her sorrow in an interview, recalling Song as a warm and encouraging figure who always motivated her. "He was a person of great pride, always protecting the dignity of fellow artists. He was a pillar in the music industry, like a sturdy pine tree," she said, reflecting on his dedication to attending events and supporting others in times of need.

Hyun-sook continued, "He always gave his best and spoke the truth. I noticed he had been looking a bit worn out lately, which was concerning. We spent a lot of time together during events, even traveling to Germany and Brazil for performances. It’s hard to believe he’s gone."

Another colleague, Bae Il-ho (배일호), shared his disbelief and sadness over the news. "Hearing about Song Dae-kwan’s passing feels surreal. He was a close mentor and always showed kindness. It’s heartbreaking to think he left us so suddenly. I wish he had more time to enjoy life, as he was always busy."

Bae Il-ho also mentioned a recent attempt to contact Song during the Lunar New Year, which went unanswered, adding to his shock at the news. "I hope he finds peace in a better place, reunited with fellow artists like Hyun-cheol (고 현철) and Song Hae (송해)."

The funeral for Song Dae-kwan will be held at Seoul National University Hospital, with the viewing scheduled for February 8 at 1:30 PM and the funeral service on February 9 at 11 AM. He is remembered for his impactful career, debuting in 1967 with 'Injeong Manheun Ajeossi' and producing numerous hits, including 'Haetdeulnal' and 'Ne Bakja.' He was celebrated as one of the 'Four Kings of Trot' alongside legends like Hyun-cheol and Tae Jin-ah (태진아).
