tripleS Member Shin Yu Sparks Controversy with 'One China' Support

Shin Yu, a Chinese member of the K-pop group tripleS, has found himself at the center of controversy after expressing support for the 'One China' policy. On July 12, screenshots of a message he sent to fans via the fan communication platform fromm circulated on social media and online communities. In the message, Shin stated, "Macau is originally part of China," and added, "Hong Kong and Taiwan are also Chinese territory."

When some fans expressed concern over his comments, he responded, "Why would I get scolded? Did I say something wrong?" He further stated, "If you disagree, don’t use my fromm."

The 'One China' policy is a stance promoted by the Chinese government, asserting that mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are inseparable parts of a single nation, with only one legitimate government.

Shin's remarks quickly spread online, leading to backlash from netizens who questioned whether it was appropriate for him to make such statements while active in Korea. Comments included, "Can he say that while working in Korea?" and "Why is he making political statements to fans? I don’t understand." Many expressed disappointment, especially noting that another member of the group, Nien, holds Taiwanese nationality, suggesting that Shin's comments were thoughtless.

As of now, Shin's team has not released any further statements regarding the controversy. Born in 2002, Shin gained recognition after participating in the 2021 Mnet reality show Girls Planet 999: Girl's War and later joined tripleS as its 15th member, continuing to engage actively with fans.
