Tributes Pour in for Victims of Jeju Air Flight Tragedy at Muan International Airport

On December 31, 2024, a heartfelt tribute was displayed at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do, honoring the victims of Jeju Air flight 7C2216. A handwritten letter from the brother of the flight's captain was found near the airport's runway, accompanied by offerings such as kimbap and hot packs. The letter expressed deep sorrow, stating, "We have come. It pains me to think you fought alone. You were already so wonderful and did enough; I hope you find happiness in a warm place. Thank you, and I’m sorry."

The captain, a veteran with over 6,800 flight hours, was a former Air Force officer who joined Jeju Air in 2014 and became a captain in March 2019, amassing over 2,500 hours as a captain.

In addition to the letter, various items including chrysanthemums, hot packs, alcohol, drinks, bread, and kimbap were placed around the area as tributes to the victims. One citizen left a note for the captain and co-pilot, expressing gratitude for their efforts to save the passengers, wishing for all onboard to find peace.

The government has declared a national mourning period until January 4, 2025, establishing joint memorial sites in 17 cities, including Seoul and Sejong, where citizens can pay their respects.
