Tragic Death of Graduate Student Sparks Investigation into Alleged Professor Misconduct
An investigation has been launched by police and educational authorities following the tragic death of a 26-year-old graduate student from Chonnam National University (전남대학교), who reportedly took his own life due to alleged mistreatment by two professors. The student's family submitted a formal complaint to the Gwangju Northern Police Station on July 16, detailing the pressures he faced in the research lab. According to the complaint, the student, identified as A, had been subjected to excessive work demands and bullying from the professors. His suicide note, found on his mobile phone, indicated the distress he experienced. It was reported that A was required to work in the lab regardless of the day of the week and received work instructions late into the night. A was discovered deceased in his dormitory on July 13 at approximately 5:54 PM. Following the discovery of his note, his family urged both the police and the university to conduct a thorough investigation. In response, Chonnam National University has suspended the two professors named in the complaint and established an investigative committee, which includes the graduate school dean and the head of the human rights center. The police are also conducting a detailed inquiry based on the complaint.
