TOP from Big Bang Skips 'Squid Game 2' Promotions Amid Controversy

Choi Seung-hyun, known as TOP from the iconic group Big Bang, has chosen to skip the promotional events for his comeback project, 'Squid Game 2'. This includes the production press conference, poster reveal, and interview schedules, leaving his presence in the highly anticipated series almost nonexistent.
TOP had previously stepped back from the entertainment industry following a 2016 conviction for marijuana use, which resulted in a 10-month prison sentence and a two-year probation. His departure from Big Bang and statements hinting at retirement marked a significant hiatus from his career.
With the global success of Netflix's original series 'Squid Game', news of TOP's casting in the second season generated considerable buzz. However, the announcement was met with mixed reactions due to his past controversies, leading to a wave of negative public sentiment.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed surprise at the backlash, stating, "I didn’t expect it to be controversial. I’m not sure if my judgment was correct, but the incident happened a long time ago, and the sentence has been served. Many entertainers have returned after similar issues, including those related to marijuana."
Despite the director's confidence in TOP's passion for acting, the ongoing public scrutiny seems to have influenced his decision to avoid the promotional activities. Notably, TOP was absent from the recently released promotional poster and has now also opted out of interviews, which were scheduled for December 20.
Although he is part of the cast, TOP's re-emergence after nine years is overshadowed by his retreat from the public eye. When asked if there might be a chance for him to participate in interviews later, representatives stated that it is a matter that requires further discussion. Fans are left wondering what performance he will deliver in 'Squid Game 2'.
'Squid Game 2' follows Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) as he returns to the deadly games for revenge, facing off against the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) in a fierce battle. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26, available in over 190 countries worldwide.
According to Netflix, the cast members participating in interviews include Lee Jung-jae, Park Gyu-young, Yang Dong-geun, Lee Seo-hwan, Wi Ha-jun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee Byung-hun, Park Sung-hoon, Im Si-wan, and Jo Yu-ri, along with director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
