Theatrical Production 'The Secret of Flowers' Set to Open on February 8

The highly anticipated play 'The Secret of Flowers' will premiere on February 8, featuring actresses Lee Yeon-hee, Ahn So-hee, and Gong Seung-yeon as the charming alcoholic character 'Monica'. At a recent press conference held at the Artist's House in Daehakro, Seoul, director and playwright Jang Jin (54) shared his thoughts on the importance of comedy in today's chaotic world. He expressed, 'If we can feel a sense of shared destiny while in the theater, perhaps that shared experience can help us move forward together.'

Jang Jin, known for his unique 'Jang Jin style' of comedy, is returning to Daehakro with this production, which marks the 10th anniversary of 'The Secret of Flowers'. The play, set in the small Italian village of Villaperosa, tells the story of four women who disguise themselves as their husbands to claim insurance money after their patriarchal partners mysteriously disappear. This marks the fifth season of the play since its debut in 2015.

The cast for this anniversary performance is particularly star-studded. The role of 'Sofia', the mastermind behind the outrageous plan, will be played by Park Sun-ok, Hwang Jung-min, and Jeong Young-joo. The character 'Jasmine', a heavy drinker, will be portrayed by Jang Young-nam, Lee El, and Jo Yeon-jin. The beautiful 'Monica' will be played by Lee Yeon-hee, Ahn So-hee, and Gong Seung-yeon, who are all known for their stunning looks and acting skills.

The stage debut of popular film and drama actresses like Lee El, Lee Yeon-hee, and Gong Seung-yeon, along with Ahn So-hee from the girl group Wonder Girls, is generating excitement. Monica's character, who disguises herself as a man, is expected to bring unexpected humor and charm to the performance.

Gong Seung-yeon expressed her excitement and nervousness about her stage debut, stating, 'I am thrilled and nervous, but I am happy to be practicing with such a great team and director. I can't wait to meet the audience.' Lee Yeon-hee, returning to the stage after childbirth, shared her long-standing desire to work with Jang Jin, saying, 'I wanted to be part of a Jang Jin production, and the timing was perfect for this role.' Ahn So-hee, who is returning to the stage after 'Closer', remarked, 'The experience on stage has been wonderful and fun. I am delighted to meet the audience again through theater.'

As Jang Jin celebrates his 30th anniversary in the industry, he reflects on his journey, stating, 'It's embarrassing and humbling to think it's been 30 years. I haven't been able to do everything I envisioned for Daehakro back then.' He emphasized the importance of focusing on the present, saying, 'What matters is what I can create today. The moment I put a play on stage, I am evaluated just like a debuting director or writer.'

The play 'The Secret of Flowers' will be performed at the Link Art Center's Bucks Hall in Daehakro, Seoul, starting February 8, 2025.
