The Tragic Story of Choi Sung-bong: From Hope to Heartbreak

Two years have passed since singer Choi Sung-bong, known as 'Korea's Paul Potts,' tragically ended his life at the age of 33. Choi, who once inspired many with his touching story and powerful voice, faced a devastating downfall after it was revealed that his battle with cancer was fabricated.
Choi was found dead in his home in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, on June 20, 2023. Just a day before his death, he posted a heartfelt message on a community forum, apologizing for his mistakes and expressing remorse to those he had wronged. He stated that he had returned all donations received over the past two years and intended to pay for his sins with his life. Unfortunately, by the time authorities arrived following a report, he had already passed away.
Rising to fame in 2011 as the runner-up on tvN's Korea's Got Talent, Choi shared his inspiring journey from an orphan to a talented vocalist. He released his album, Slowpoke (느림보), in 2014 and published a book titled 'You Only Live Once' in 2016. His story resonated with many, leading to accolades such as the Minister of the Interior and Safety's commendation in 2017.
However, in May 2020, Choi revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, prostate cancer, hypothyroidism, and thyroid cancer, which garnered sympathy from the public. He continued to perform and share updates about his health while pursuing his dream of being a singer through crowdfunding.
In 2021, allegations surfaced questioning the authenticity of his cancer diagnosis. It was discovered that Choi had spent over 30 million won on entertainment rather than medical expenses, leading to his reputation as 'Korea's Paul Potts' being tarnished as he was labeled a 'big spender' in nightlife. Despite his attempts to deny the accusations, he ultimately admitted to causing public outrage and promised to return the donations, stating he would find a way to repay them before leaving.
After returning all the funds, Choi took his own life. The police determined there were no signs of foul play following an investigation and autopsy. His body was placed in a morgue at a hospital in Seoul as no family members came forward, and his former manager arranged for a two-day funeral at his own expense.
Choi Sung-bong's life, which once inspired hope and comfort, ended in tragedy, revealing the stark contrast between his public persona and the reality of his situation. The narrative he left behind has since lost its meaning, overshadowed by the truth of his actions.
