The Heartfelt Film 'Harbin' Set to Captivate Audiences

The highly anticipated film 'Harbin' is ready to greet audiences. On December 18, a press conference for the movie was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall, featuring cast members Hyun Bin (현빈), Jo Woo-jin (조우진), Jeon Yeo-been (전여빈), Park Hoon (박훈), Yoo Jae-myung (유재명), Lee Dong-wook (이동욱), and director Woo Min-ho (우민호). Park Jung-min (박정민) was unable to attend due to filming commitments.
'Harbin' (directed by Woo Min-ho, distributed by CJ ENM, produced by Hive Media Corp) is set in 1909 and depicts the intense pursuit and suspicion between those heading to Harbin for a common goal and those chasing them. This film marks another collaboration between director Woo Min-ho and Hive Media Corp, known for their previous work on 'The Outlaws' (내부자들), raising expectations among fans.
During the event, director Woo Min-ho shared, "Since this is based on a true story and revolves around the life of Ahn Jung-geun (안중근), the title 'Harbin' reflects the gathering of individuals for a singular purpose. I aimed to portray their journey nobly and capture their emotions. It was challenging, but I sought out real locations and filmed the movie in a classic style. In the current Korean film industry, I pondered how to differentiate this from OTT films and approached the project with sincerity."
Reflecting on the film's timely release, Woo noted, "I began planning this film about three years ago. My previous works often focused on villains and critiqued modern Korean history. For the first time, I am creating a piece dedicated to those who devoted themselves to this country and their homeland. I researched Ahn Jung-geun's autobiography and materials on independence fighters. Ahn was only 30 at the time, and most were in their 20s and 30s, with some in their 40s and 50s. I wanted to understand what motivated these young individuals to make such sacrifices. I feel both grateful and apologetic. I hope this film provides comfort and strength to viewers, reminding them that despite the chaotic times we face, we will overcome and feel a sense of pride."
Hyun Bin, who plays Ahn Jung-geun, expressed his gratitude during the preparation for 'Harbin', stating, "As we wrapped up filming, I felt immense gratitude. I reflected on those who have given us the lives we lead today. I am thankful to director Woo and the entire crew, as well as my fellow cast members."
He added, "I felt there was little I could do. I searched for everything I could find about General Ahn, visiting memorials and studying his legacy. I imagined and contemplated his life every single day of preparation. I believe I repeatedly engaged in the process of imagining and creating his character."
Hyun Bin also emphasized the film's message, saying, "In our movie, Ahn Jung-geun and his comrades faced numerous adversities but persevered with conviction, ultimately achieving positive outcomes. I believe that if we unite and take steps forward, a better tomorrow awaits us. The phrase 'For A better tomorrow' on our posters resonates deeply with us. I hope many find strength in our film."
Jo Woo-jin, who plays Kim Sang-hyun, described the project as challenging, stating, "This was a very difficult film. I wondered if I had ever felt such camaraderie while filming. I am curious about how audiences will react. The character was complex, and I initially thought of him as an ordinary person who could evoke empathy from viewers."
He also shared his fondness for his co-star Park Jung-min, saying, "I miss Jung-min a lot. He recently sent me a photo from Latvia, and it felt strange not having him around. I wanted to share this experience with him. We had different goals in our roles, but filming together was rewarding."
Jeon Yeo-been, who plays a supporting role, reflected on the film's deeper themes, stating, "I realized that my ability to be here and smile comfortably is due to the support of many people. This film made me think about what it means to protect something beyond oneself. It prompted reflections on sincerity and altruism."
Park Hoon, who portrays the antagonist Mori Tatsuo, expressed his honor in being part of the film, saying, "I was moved by my fellow actors' performances. Everyone was genuinely committed, which inspired me to give my best. I even shaved my head for the role."
Yoo Jae-myung, who plays Choi Jae-hyung, shared his emotional experience while filming, stating, "I felt a deep connection to the message that we exist today because of those who came before us. I am filled with respect and gratitude for my colleagues. This experience has instilled a sense of duty in me as an actor."
Lee Dong-wook, who plays Lee Chang-seob, expressed his gratitude for working with such talented individuals, saying, "It feels like a great fortune to collaborate with such excellent actors and staff. I hope to honor the efforts of those who fought for independence."
As the press conference concluded, the cast and director expressed their hopes that 'Harbin' would resonate with audiences, especially in these challenging times. The film is set to be released in theaters on December 24.
