The Boyz's Ju Haknyeon Under Investigation for Alleged Prostitution

Ju Haknyeon (주학년), a former member of the boy group The Boyz, is facing a police investigation following a formal complaint filed with the National Petition Office regarding allegations of prostitution. This controversy has escalated beyond a mere personal issue, as South Korean law stipulates that 'overseas prostitution' can also be subject to criminal penalties.

On June 19, a complaint was officially submitted to the National Petition Office, requesting an investigation into Ju Haknyeon's alleged involvement in overseas prostitution and any potential connections with his agency's staff. The complaint has been forwarded to the Women and Youth Division of the Gangnam Police Station, and the case has been assigned for further investigation.

The complainant emphasized that this issue is not just an individual misconduct but reflects a structural problem within the entertainment industry. Reports suggest that while in Japan, Ju Haknyeon engaged in sexual relations with a former adult film actress during a drinking session and allegedly paid for these services, which constitutes a violation of the Act on the Punishment of Prostitution and Related Acts. The complainant also pointed out that a former producer from his agency was excluded from work due to similar prostitution-related issues, calling for a thorough investigation into any possible complicity or negligence.

The complainant further stated, "It is a dereliction of social responsibility for an idol, who should inspire youth with dreams and hope, to be involved in prostitution," stressing the need for a broader investigation into the entertainment industry as a whole.

The complaint is based on Article 21 of the current law regarding the punishment of acts related to prostitution. According to this law, individuals who engage in prostitution can face up to one year in prison or fines of up to 3 million won. Notably, South Korean nationals who engage in prostitution abroad are also subject to domestic legal penalties.

Ju Haknyeon was previously embroiled in controversy after Japanese media reported that he had been seen with influencer Asuka Kirara (아스카 키라라), a former adult film actress, in Roppongi, Tokyo. The reports indicated that during his stay in Japan last month, he had physical contact with her that went beyond mere acquaintance, suggesting a transactional nature to their interaction.

In response to the allegations, Ju Haknyeon took to social media early on June 19 to post a handwritten letter denying any involvement in prostitution or illegal activities, admitting only to attending a drinking session with acquaintances. However, public sentiment has turned cold, with some fans expressing disappointment, stating that regardless of the legality, his image and trust as an idol have already been tarnished.

As the controversy grew, his agency, 100 Entertainment (원헌드레드), announced on June 18 that after thorough discussions with The Boyz members, they had decided to terminate Ju Haknyeon's contract and his membership in the group. The agency acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and recognized that it was no longer feasible to maintain trust in him as an artist during the fact-finding process.

The investigation is now in the hands of the police, with the Women and Youth Division of the Gangnam Police Station stating that they plan to conduct a fair and thorough investigation to uncover the truth of the matter. This incident is poised to become a significant moment for the K-pop industry, prompting a reevaluation of trust and ethical standards within the sector.
