The Birth of 'Divorce Insurance' Unveiled in New Drama

The new tvN drama 'Divorce Insurance' (이혼보험), which premiered on March 31, 2025, explores the intriguing backstory behind the concept of divorce insurance. In the first episode, the 'Divorce Insurance Task Force' boldly promotes their product at a wedding fair filled with engaged couples. The character No Gi-jun (이동욱) passionately introduces the insurance, stating, "Everyone tells you to accept your fate and love, but how easy is that? Even if an unexpected divorce comes your way, Plus Loss Insurance has a groundbreaking product to help you cope."
He continues, "Honestly, do you think you can fully understand this? At the start, everyone dreams of a rosy future, but alimony can leave you broke in an instant. Divorce is more complicated and challenging than marriage. It can be more frustrating than any accident or illness, and we will provide coverage based on individual circumstances." Despite his fervent pitch, the team is met with plush toys thrown by the couples, leading to their eventual ejection from the event.
The story then flashes back three months earlier, where No Gi-jun is seen struggling alone at home to develop this innovative insurance. Inspired by a dream about divorce, he approaches Na Dae-bok (김원해) with the idea, emphasizing that "divorce is the real risk of our time." Na, however, questions whether they can accurately assess the risks involved. Gi-jun confidently responds, "Look at life insurance; if we can cover death, we can cover divorce too."
On the day of the crucial meeting, Gi-jun presents the divorce insurance proposal but faces skepticism from risk surveyor An Jeong-man (이광수). After some hurdles, he secures approval but later confronts Jeong-man, saying, "Think about it. You've been divorced once; I've been divorced three times. We're betting on a 200% probability here." Jeong-man, curious, asks why Gi-jun has been divorced three times, to which Gi-jun replies, "I just can't do one-night stands. I will definitely create this divorce insurance."
Later, in a private conversation, Jeong-man presses Gi-jun for the reasons behind his divorces, suggesting that if he can't share with a childhood friend, how can he expect others to trust him? Gi-jun lists his reasons: differing views on marriage, worldviews, and life philosophies, prompting Jeong-man to joke, "Are you serious? Did you suggest an open marriage?" Gi-jun humorously confirms this, eliciting laughter.
Meanwhile, Gi-jun's first intense encounter with Kang Han-deul (이주빈) is depicted. One month post-divorce, Han-deul is seen moving a mattress left by her ex-husband. After a night out with Jeong-man, Gi-jun unexpectedly runs into Han-deul, leading to a comical situation where they both end up on the mattress, inadvertently causing a scene in public.
The two are eventually taken to the police station, where Gi-jun recalls a recent encounter with Han-deul at a supermarket, where she was visibly upset over her divorce. Feeling sympathetic, he apologizes, saying, "I’m sorry as a fellow resident of the same apartment. Let’s make amends." He then quips, "The chances of us meeting again are slimmer than an albino raccoon being born. Let’s go our separate ways."
The next day, Gi-jun encounters Han-deul again during interviews for the Divorce Insurance Task Force, discovering she is a former underwriter. As he reviews her application, he realizes she recently divorced, leading to her mattress disposal. Han-deul asks Gi-jun about the success rate of the divorce insurance, claiming that to achieve a 1 in 500,000 chance, they need someone as skilled as her on the team, catching his interest.
With the addition of the non-marriage advocate Jo Ah-young (추소정), the Divorce Insurance Task Force is formed. They later welcome special consultant Jeon Na-rae (이다희), who surprises Gi-jun by introducing herself as his ex-wife, to which he humorously clarifies, "No, not ex-wife, but my ex-ex-wife."
