Teamwork in Competition: 'Universe League' Brings Sports-like Idol Showdown

A new idol audition program reminiscent of a sports competition is set to debut. SBS's latest variety show, 'Universe League' (유니버스 리그), held its production presentation on November 19 at the SBS headquarters in Mokdong, Seoul. The event featured the show's producers, Lee Hwan-jin (이환진) and Yoo Hwa (유화), along with artists Jay Park (박재범), Lee Chang-seob (이창섭), Yugyeom (유겸), EL CAPITXN (엘 케피탄), Ten (텐), and Yangyang (양양).
'Universe League' serves as the boy group counterpart to the massive girl group audition 'Universe Ticket' (유니버스 티켓). Continuing from the previous season, PD Lee Hwan-jin is at the helm, aiming to discover the next global boy group stars.
What sets this program apart is its league format, as indicated by its title. Unlike traditional audition shows where trainees compete individually, 'Universe League' features team-based competitions. Three teams will participate, but only one will achieve their dream of debuting and performing on a global stage.
PD Lee Hwan-jin explained, "We have incorporated sports elements into the format. We are building a universe following 'Universe Ticket.' The key difference lies in the focus on male idols, as we wanted to create a format that resonates with the competitive spirit of young boys. Ultimately, the structure emphasizes competition and teamwork."
He added, "We have a smaller pool of 42 participants compared to other auditions. While this may seem limiting, we selected individuals who could stand out based on various criteria. Given that the show consists of only ten episodes, we aim to showcase these contestants as much as possible. They have been vetted through multiple auditions based on talent, star quality, potential, and appearance. We encourage viewers to pick their favorites."
Jay Park will serve as the MC, acting as a bridge between the contestants and the audience while encompassing the show's universe. He humorously noted, "I don’t feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility since I’m not the one leading the show. I’m here to support the director and shine a light on the participants. I just prepared by visiting the salon this morning."
Notably, prominent K-pop artists will take on the roles of team leaders, guiding their respective groups. Lee Chang-seob from BTOB, Yugyeom from GOT7, producer EL CAPITXN, and Ten and Yangyang from NCT/WayV will lead the Rhythm, Groove, and Beat teams, respectively. They will draft team members and make trades to form their ideal lineups.
The competition will be fierce as the directors select their teams, driven by both their affection for the trainees and their desire to win.
PD Lee elaborated, "We considered what unique qualities each team could showcase. Each director has a distinct musical style, and we carefully selected them to lead the teams. Each team will also have its own coaching staff to provide essential idol training. We hope to see the trainees grow through various methods while incorporating the directors' unique styles. The show will feature interesting dynamics, especially with the directors' trades enhancing the teams' compositions."
PD Yoo added, "Regarding the directors' trades, the participants are deeply invested. They have been closely observing the trainees for a long time, and the trading process can be quite emotional. While it may be entertaining for viewers, it can be bittersweet for the directors, who develop strong bonds with the contestants."
Lee Chang-seob, the Groove team leader, remarked, "Each team has a clear identity, and the genres are distinctly different, making for an exciting viewing experience. The Groove team focuses on the musical aspects I value. I’m not a strict coach; I teach with love and aim to make the learning process easy for the kids. They are responding well and adapting to the training."
Yugyeom, leading the Beat team, stated, "The Beat team is unique. I want to share everything I’ve learned with my teammates. While I want to win the competition, I also hope these friends can sustain their careers as artists for a long time. I emphasize the importance of practice and repetition, as that’s what leads to improvement and shines through on stage. I’m making an effort to communicate details clearly."
EL CAPITXN shared, "Having come from the audition program 'K-pop Star,' I’ve also been part of an idol group. Now, as a producer, I feel a connection with the trainees, who are on a similar path. I want to support them and share my experiences. I feel a strong sense of responsibility in this role."
Ten expressed pride in the Rhythm team, saying, "The Rhythm team showcases the individual charms of the members. I focus on providing solutions to their challenges and emphasize how to make our performances more engaging rather than just perfecting synchronized choreography. I encourage them to express their personal gestures on stage."
Yangyang added, "I had similar experiences when I debuted, always thinking about how to present myself better on camera. I aim to be a senior they can comfortably approach for advice."
In conclusion, PD Lee remarked, "At the LA Lakers stadium, there’s a phrase: 'I can’t, we can.' I believe this encapsulates our program well." He also addressed the influx of audition shows, stating, "With so many auditions available, participants have been eager to try out for various programs. It feels like the trainees have chosen us, which heightens my sense of responsibility. I want to ensure they don’t regret not choosing other auditions."
PD Yoo emphasized the increasing representation of global participants, stating, "We need to respond to the growing global audition trend. We’ve encountered many attractive contestants, which promises to make the show exciting."
The dream match for these aspiring boys, 'Universe League,' is set to premiere on November 22 at 11:20 PM.
