The Supreme Court of South Korea is set to deliver its ruling on the accounting fraud allegations against Lee Jae-Yong, the Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, on July 17, 2025. This decision comes nearly five years after Lee was indicted in September 2020. The Supreme Court's third division, led by Justice Oh Seok-jun, will announce the verdict at 11:15 AM, involving Lee and 14 other defendants.

Lee was charged with manipulating stock prices to facilitate the merger between Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T in 2015, which was allegedly aimed at consolidating management control and strengthening the group's dominance. He is also accused of being involved in accounting fraud at Samsung BioLogics to inflate the value of Cheil Industries, where he is a major shareholder.

Both the first and second trials acquitted Lee of all 19 charges, with the first trial stating that there was insufficient evidence to conclude that the merger was solely for the purpose of succession. It noted that there were legitimate business objectives for Samsung C&T as well.

During the appeals process, the prosecution submitted an additional 2,144 pieces of evidence and amended the charges in an attempt to prove their case. However, the second trial court ruled that there was no evidence of intent to commit accounting fraud, stating that criminal responsibility could not be established based on speculation or assumptions regarding the serious allegations.

The prosecution's decision to appeal the acquittals in both previous trials has drawn criticism from some legal experts, who have labeled it as an "unreasonable appeal."

The chairman of the Seoul Taxi Transportation Business Association, Cha Mo (차모), aged 72, was arrested by police on June 23 for allegedly engaging in monetary transactions in exchange for appointments to association-related positions. Following his arrest, he hired two attorneys from a major law firm and filed a request for a review of the legality of his detention, which is set to be heard on June 26 at the Seoul Central District Court. Cha has reportedly denied the allegations regarding the trading of positions.

Witnesses within the association have claimed that Cha has wielded unchecked power for over a decade, often referred to as the 'Taxi King.' The closed-off power structure of the association, combined with a lack of oversight, has allegedly allowed him to engage in nepotism and favoritism.

According to our investigation, suspicions arose last June that Cha used his position as chairman to facilitate monetary exchanges related to appointments within the association. In April of the same year, over 340 members formed a group called the 'Association Reform Group' and submitted complaints to various government bodies, including the presidential office and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, alleging that Cha was soliciting bribes in exchange for job placements.

In October, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's special investigation unit conducted searches at the association's headquarters in Songpa District and at Cha's residence, reportedly uncovering bundles of cash amounting to several hundred million won. Authorities suspect that this money may have been received by Cha in return for granting favors to association members.

Several members have recently testified to the police that Cha demanded money in exchange for appointments within the association. The police have reportedly gathered some statements regarding the amounts requested. However, Cha has claimed that the cash found was not related to bribes but rather proceeds from a real estate sale. His attorney stated that it would be inappropriate to disclose specific positions ahead of the review of his detention.

The Seoul Taxi Association is the largest organization representing individual taxi drivers in South Korea, with approximately 49,074 members as of February. Each member pays a monthly fee of 20,000 won, contributing to an annual budget of around 15 billion won. Due to restrictions on the number of taxi licenses issued by local governments, new drivers must obtain licenses from departing drivers, a process managed by the association. Members have expressed that, despite being independent operators, they cannot operate without the association's approval, highlighting its significant influence.

Cha, who obtained his taxi license in 1986, has held various positions within the association, including delegate in 1998 and head of the Gangnam branch in 2002, before becoming chairman in 2005. The association's bylaws state that the chairman can serve only one additional term, yet Cha has reportedly been re-elected multiple times through by-elections, serving a total of 15 years.

The chairman holds considerable power within the association, including the authority to discipline members, which can include expulsion. One taxi driver remarked that the chairman essentially controls their livelihoods. The chairman's annual salary is reported to be between 130 million and 140 million won, with an additional operational budget of around 50 million won.

As the construction industry faces downturns and domestic demand weakens, many baby boomer retirees are entering the taxi industry, further increasing the association's influence. The value of taxi licenses has risen significantly, from 93.81 million won in the second half of 2023 to over 100 million won last month.

A representative from the Seoul Taxi Association noted that the chairman can appoint over twenty key positions without any formal decision-making process, and when including various positions that come with allowances for attending meetings, the total exceeds one hundred.

In 2021, several officials from the Seoul Taxi Association were indicted for fraudulently claiming vehicle repair costs, while in 2023, it was revealed that officials received bribes for directing work to specific companies. Internally, there are calls for the government to implement oversight mechanisms, as the association, originally established to protect the rights of individual taxi drivers, is perceived to operate in a closed and authoritarian manner.

건설 산업이 침체되고 국내 수요가 약화됨에 따라 많은 베이비붐 세대 퇴직자들이 택시 산업에 진입하고 있어 협회의 영향력이 더욱 증가하고 있다. 택시 면허의 가치는 2023년 하반기 9,381만 원에서 지난달 1억 원 이상으로 크게 상승했다.

서울 택시 협회의 한 관계자는 회장이 공식적인 의사결정 과정 없이 20개 이상의 주요 직위를 임명할 수 있으며, 회의 참석 수당이 포함된 다양한 직위를 고려할 경우 총 수가 100개를 초과한다고 언급했다.

2021년 서울 택시 협회의 여러 관계자들이 차량 수리 비용을 부당하게 청구한 혐의로 기소되었으며, 2023년에는 특정 회사에 작업을 지시하는 대가로 뇌물을 받은 사실이 드러났다. 내부적으로는 정부가 감독 메커니즘을 도입해야 한다는 요구가 있으며, 개인 택시 운전사의 권리를 보호하기 위해 설립된 협회가 폐쇄적이고 권위적으로 운영되고 있다는 인식이 있다.

K-pop group SEVENTEEN (에스쿱스, 정한, 조슈아, 준, 호시, 원우, 우지, 디에잇, 민규, 도겸, 승관, 버논, 디노) has added another platinum certification to their accolades from the Japan Record Association. As of June 26, 2025, their song '손오공' from the mini album 'FML' has surpassed 100 million streams on local music platforms as of May. This marks SEVENTEEN's second platinum certification, following their first for '아주 NICE' in September of last year. The Japan Record Association awards certifications based on streaming numbers, categorizing them as Gold (over 50 million), Platinum (over 100 million), and Diamond (over 500 million). 

In addition to '손오공', SEVENTEEN has received multiple Gold certifications for tracks such as 'Fallin' Flower (舞い落ちる花びら)', '만세', 'Ready to love', '박수', 'Darl+ing', 'HOT', 'HIT', 'Rock with you', 'Left & Right', '예쁘다', '울고 싶지 않아', and the special unit BSS (부석순) with '파이팅 해야지 (Feat. 이영지)'. 

The song '손오공' draws parallels between SEVENTEEN's journey and the character Sun Wukong, depicting growth through trials and tribulations. Upon its release in 2023, it spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Global 200 and has since accumulated over 200 million streams on Spotify, showcasing its enduring popularity. 

The mini album 'FML', which features '손오공', achieved nearly 4 million sales on its release day and has sold over 6.2 million copies within two months, setting a record for the highest sales of a single K-pop album. 

Additionally, SEVENTEEN's fifth studio album 'HAPPY BURSTDAY' has also seen remarkable success, recording initial sales of 2.52 million copies, the highest for any K-pop album released this year. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, tying SEVENTEEN's highest chart position, and remained on the chart for three consecutive weeks.

SEVENTEEN Achieves Second Platinum Certification in Japan

In a recent episode of tvN's variety show, You Quiz on the Block (유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭), actress Shin Eun-kyung shared her unexpected decision to study abroad in the United States and Japan during her peak career moments. 

During the June 25 broadcast, host Yoo Jae-suk asked her about her unique journey, referencing her notable role in the film Miss Granny (수상한 그녀). Shin Eun-kyung, who gained fame at 18 after starring in the hit movie Sunny (써니), explained that she felt the need to experience life as a student before it was too late. "I thought if I didn't go now, I wouldn't have a teenage life as Shin Eun-kyung. I wanted to experience being a student, so I went to New York for about two and a half years," she said.

Yoo Jae-suk inquired about her newfound interest in classical music and jazz during her time in New York. Shin responded, "New York has many famous jazz bars and performance venues. Friends introduced me to these places, and that's how I got to experience it."

After her studies, she starred in Miss Granny, which also became a box office success, earning her the Best Actress award at the Baeksang Arts Awards. She revealed that she initially turned down the role, feeling unqualified for the character. However, director Hwang Dong-hyuk convinced her that she was the right fit after a lengthy discussion.

Shin Eun-kyung also made headlines in 2017 when she suddenly ventured into the Japanese entertainment scene. She shared, "At that time, I was really into Japanese rock music. I thought about forming a rock band in Japan and taking over the Tokyo Dome."

When Yoo Jae-suk asked if she had been listening to a lot of music, he playfully requested a song. Instead, Shin showcased her dance skills, prompting Yoo to invite her to collaborate on a variety show.

Reflecting on her early days in Japan, Shin admitted that acting in Japanese was challenging. "Even now, Japanese is the hardest for me," she confessed. She explained that she had only six months of study before receiving a project offer, which left her with little time to prepare. "I would first read the script translated into Korean to fully understand it before tackling the Japanese version."

She detailed her rigorous preparation process, which included listening to recordings, practicing alone, and taking one-on-one lessons to perfect her pronunciation before filming.

Her hard work paid off when, just three years after her debut in Japan, she won the Best Actress award at the Japanese Academy Awards for her role in the film The Newspaper Reporter (신문기자). "I was shocked to hear my name announced as a nominee at such a big awards ceremony. I remember walking to the stage feeling overwhelmed," she shared.
