Supporters of Former President Yoon Hold Overnight Rally Amid Investigation
On the evening of June 28, supporters of former President Yoon Suk-yeol gathered in large numbers outside the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office as he faced his first summons in a special investigation into insurrection. Hundreds of Yoon's supporters occupied two lanes of the road, chanting slogans such as 'Protect the Judiciary, Protect Politics' and 'Yoon Again,' while calling for the arrest of Lee Jae-myung, the current president. Some supporters waved signs reading 'Not my president' alongside images of Lee.
As the rally continued, participants were seen wearing red hats and sashes emblazoned with 'Arrest Lee Jae-myung' while others queued for instant noodles provided by the organizers. Earlier in the day, around 300 supporters had dispersed after Yoon entered the prosecutors' office but regrouped around 6 PM, bolstered by attendees from a conservative YouTuber's rally in Yeouido.
Approximately 70 meters away, a counter-protest organized by the progressive group Candlelight Action was taking place, demanding Yoon's arrest and the dissolution of the People Power Party. They held signs reading 'Arrest Yoon Seok-yeol and Kim Geon-hee' and shouted slogans against the former president.
The police estimated around 400 people participated in the Candlelight Action rally, which began around 6 PM and later marched towards Nonhyeon Station. Tensions escalated as both groups faced off across the road, with Yoon's supporters crossing into the opposing sidewalk to taunt the counter-protesters. The situation was marked by shouting and the waving of national flags, with both sides exchanging heated remarks.
Meanwhile, the special investigation into Yoon resumed after a 3.5-hour delay caused by his refusal to cooperate, with expectations that the questioning could extend late into the night.
