SUPER JUNIOR Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Fan Song

On June 9, 2025, 14-year-old 장원준 (Jang Won-jun), a first-year student at 충현중학교 (Chunghyun Middle School) in Gyeonggi Province, visited Andong Lake (안동호) with the goal of photographing the breeding population of the black-tailed gull (쇠제비갈매기) on an artificial sand island, a popular spot for migratory birdwatching tours located 20 minutes by boat from Andong Dam.

This was not Jang's first visit to Andong Lake; he had previously come in June of last year while in sixth grade, capturing various birds around the lake with his telephoto camera. His photographs from that trip were donated to the city of Andong, where city officials praised his work for its dynamic and vivid portrayal of wildlife. His photos were even displayed at the city hall entrance for a month.

Jang's fascination with birds began in the fourth grade after he watched bird-related videos that his mother was viewing. Now, his study room is filled with 23 different bird guides and books, including titles like 'Birds and Humans', 'Surviving in the Bird World', and 'The Language of Birds'.

For the past three years, Jang has pursued his passion for bird photography, aspiring to become one of the top ornithologists in South Korea. He diligently studies to gain admission to a prestigious university's biology program. His mother, 유정윤 (Yoo Jeong-yoon), shared that she bought him a beginner-friendly 300mm telephoto camera due to his keen interest in observing and installing birdhouses around their home.

Upon arriving at the birdwatching island, Jang immediately set up a birdhouse, inscribing the installation date and his name on it. He explained, "The birdhouse I installed is mainly used by resident birds like the great tit (박새), marsh tit (곤줄박이), and Eurasian nuthatch (딱새). If we promote a birdhouse donation campaign for visitors to the Andong Lake black-tailed gull observation island, it could become a bird paradise in the future."

Jang spent the entire day enthusiastically capturing images of various birds, even spending the night on the observation island to continue his photography the next day. He identified the sounds of birds, saying, "That sound is from the brown-eared bulbul (직박구리). When I see or hear birds, I can feel the vibrancy of nature."

At dawn, the sounds of birds awakened him, and he was able to identify many species, including the black-tailed gull, whiskered tern, brown-eared bulbul, little ringed plover, great tit, jay, and more. He successfully photographed several of them.

Looking ahead, Jang aims to purchase a mid-range camera with a lens of 600mm or more, saving his allowance to afford the expensive equipment. He expressed, "I was very impressed by how the black-tailed gulls and various birds coexist with humans at Andong Lake. I plan to return next year with friends who also love birds."

In a collaborative effort, the city of Andong and the Ministry of Environment have completed infrastructure facilities, including observation decks and ecological trails, to promote the black-tailed gull, which is designated as a second-class endangered species. The observation deck, located 300 meters from their habitat, is equipped with high-powered telescopes and ecological interpretation panels, along with planted flowers and trees.

The black-tailed gull, primarily found on sandy beaches, migrates from Australia and New Zealand to breed in Korea and Japan between March and July. They were first spotted at Andong Lake in 2013. However, due to rising water levels since 2019, the city and the Ministry of Environment installed two permanent artificial sand islands in 2020 and 2021 to support stable breeding habitats.

On the afternoon of June 28, a large-scale parade themed around the hit Netflix series 'Squid Game' took place in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, leading to significant traffic disruptions on Sejong-daero. A 20-year-old radar technician in the South Korean Navy has received a suspended prison sentence for secretly entering the sleeping quarters of female soldiers and stealing their underwear. On June 29, 2025, Judge Kim Joo-seong of the Suwon District Court sentenced the defendant, referred to as A, to three months in prison, suspended for one year, after being charged with burglary and trespassing.

Additionally, on May 12, 2024, at approximately 5:43 a.m., he was found to have entered the same area again, stealing three pieces of underwear from two other female soldiers, including Sergeant C. 

Judge Kim stated, "The defendant's actions of breaking into the victims' rooms at night to steal their underwear reflect poorly on his character, and he has not received forgiveness from the victims. However, the court considered that he acknowledged his wrongdoing and showed remorse, as well as the fact that he has no prior criminal record."

On June 29, 2025, after attending his first summons for the insurrection special investigation, former President Yoon Suk-yeol was escorted home by hundreds of supporters. The gathering began around 10 PM the previous evening, with supporters lining the streets from the Seoul High Prosecutor's Office to his residence at Acro Vista. 

At approximately 12:45 AM, the previously locked doors of the Seoul High Prosecutor's Office opened, and by 12:58 AM, Yoon emerged from the building, quickly entering his vehicle without responding to any media inquiries. As his car left the prosecutor's office at 12:59 AM, the crowd erupted in cheers, chanting, "We love you, Mr. President!" and "Thank you for your hard work!" 

Yoon acknowledged his supporters with a faint smile and a wave as his vehicle slowly made its way along Seocho-daero towards his home. Many supporters ran alongside the car, expressing their dedication with shouts of, "You've worked hard, Mr. President!" and "We will protect you!" 

Earlier, around 10 PM, supporters had prepared a human chain stretching approximately 940 meters along the streets leading to the prosecutor's office, with police estimating the crowd size at around 1,500 at 9 PM. However, as the night wore on and Yoon's return was delayed, many supporters left, leaving about 200 by dawn. 

When news broke that Yoon's questioning had concluded and the document review was starting, the crowd cheered, chanting his name louder. Barricades were set up in front of the demonstrators, who waved their phones with flashlights in anticipation of Yoon's exit. One YouTuber encouraged the crowd to flash their lights in support when Yoon appeared. 

As the investigation extended past midnight, frustration grew among supporters, who directed their anger towards the prosecutor's office, questioning whether Yoon was being deliberately held back. Some even suggested they would remain there until they received a response. 

Earlier in the day, a small group of supporters for President Lee Jae-myung had dispersed by evening, but tensions flared briefly between passersby and demonstrators. Yoon returned home after more than 15 hours at the prosecutor's office, having arrived there at 9:56 AM the previous day.

On July 16, the first hearing of the retrial for Kim Jae-kyu, the former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (now the National Intelligence Service), will commence, marking 45 years since he was sentenced to death for the assassination of President Park Chung-hee on October 26, 1979. Kim, who was executed just four days after his death sentence was handed down on May 20, 1980, famously stated during his trial, "Your Honor, the outcome of this trial will be judged by the people in four to five months." 

Despite his claims of not having any intention to instigate a coup, the fact remains that he assassinated the sitting president. Supporters of Park view Kim as a traitor and a coup instigator, while some in the progressive camp regard him as a figure who dismantled the Yushin regime to prevent greater suffering. 

Historically, however, Kim's legacy remains ambiguous. Kim Sung-shin, a professor at Hanyang University and Kim Jae-kyu's nephew, expressed to Weekly Chosun that discussions surrounding the events of 45 years ago have not progressed significantly, likening the situation to a 'frozen' state. The retrial will legally reassess whether Kim's actions constituted a coup and if the original trial was just. The outcome could redefine how future generations perceive this pivotal moment in Korean history. 

The retrial was initiated by Kim's younger sister in 2020, a significant step considering that the family had previously been hesitant to pursue a retrial or even a restoration of Kim's honor. Despite the democratization of South Korea post-1987, the family faced fears of public backlash. Kim Sung-shin noted that even during the Democratic Party's governance, which has historically sought to reevaluate events like the Gwangju Uprising, there has been little movement regarding the October 26 incident. 

An interesting anecdote shared by Kim Sung-shin involved a meeting between Father Ham Se-woong of the Catholic Priests for Justice and then-President Roh Moo-hyun, where the priest advocated for Kim's honor restoration. However, the response from the Blue House was lukewarm, indicating a lack of political incentive to pursue the matter. 

The retrial's chances of success were initially low, with legal experts estimating a 10-20% likelihood of retrial approval. However, on February 19, 2025, the court decided to proceed with the retrial, citing new evidence related to allegations of torture during the original investigation. 

The key issues in the retrial will focus on whether Kim's motive was indeed to overthrow the government and whether the investigation process was lawful. The court will examine claims of torture and the rapid conclusion of the original trial, which lasted only 16 days for the first instance and just six days for the appeal. 

As the retrial unfolds, it may lead to a reevaluation of Kim Jae-kyu's actions and their implications for the Yushin dictatorship. Ultimately, Kim Sung-shin believes the true purpose of the retrial is to create historical documentation that future generations can reference, allowing for an objective assessment of the events surrounding the assassination.
