Substance Surpasses 160,000 Viewers, Dominates Box Office

The film 'Substance' (서브스턴스), directed by Coralie Parra, has officially surpassed 160,000 viewers. Released in 2024, it has outperformed 'Poor Things' to become the top-rated foreign film with a restricted rating, and it ranks second overall, following 'Zone of Interest'. According to the integrated ticketing system, 'Substance' reached a cumulative audience of 160,249 on January 1, just 22 days after its release. This achievement places it second in the box office for independent foreign films released in 2024, trailing only 'Zone of Interest' (204,134 viewers) and surpassing 'Poor Things' (156,159 viewers).

Notably, despite being a body horror film—a genre known for its challenges—'Substance' has maintained a high satisfaction rating of 91% on the CGV Golden Egg Index. It continues to generate buzz and sustain long-term box office success, even amidst competition from new releases.

'Substance' is a nonstop bloody thriller that explores the intense conflict between oneself and a better version of oneself. Even in its fourth week, the film is drawing close to 5,000 viewers on weekdays, and it is expected to surpass 200,000 viewers soon, solidifying its position as the top independent foreign film of 2024. Both 'Substance' and 'Zone of Interest' are distributed by the company Chanran.

The film has garnered significant acclaim, winning 27 awards and receiving 124 nominations, including the Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness section. It has also been nominated in five and seven major categories at the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Awards, respectively. Demi Moore, who stars in the film, delivers a powerful performance that marks her first-ever nomination for an Academy Award. Audience reviews have praised her acting, with comments like, "Demi Moore deserves an award for her insane performance" and "This is award-worthy acting."
