Strict Dress Code Imposed at the 78th Cannes Film Festival

The 78th Cannes Film Festival is generating significant buzz as it approaches its opening, particularly due to the newly implemented 'no exposure' rule. Although no Korean films have been invited to the competitive section this year, acclaimed director Hong Sang-soo has been appointed as a jury member. Additionally, actors Kim Go-eun (김고은) and Han So-hee (한소희) will grace the red carpet, showcasing their presence at the prestigious event.
On May 12, the Cannes Film Festival's official website announced a revised dress code that is now more stringent. This new guideline prohibits excessive exposure not only on the red carpet but also in screening venues and various official events. Attire such as nude dresses, overly voluminous gowns, and excessively long dresses will also be restricted.
The festival organizers explained that this measure aims to clarify existing regulations based on French etiquette and to uphold the dignity of the festival.
This change in regulations is largely seen as a response to recent controversies surrounding excessive exposure at award ceremonies and film festivals, particularly involving global celebrities like Bianca Sensori and Bella Hadid, who have faced backlash for their sheer and revealing outfits. The Cannes Film Festival appears to be taking proactive steps in this regard.
However, there is also criticism stemming from the local atmosphere that values freedom of expression, which contrasts with the artistic festival's emphasis on diverse forms of expression. As a result, all eyes are on the atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony.
At this year's festival, Kim Go-eun and Han So-hee will represent the Korean film industry, although they are not attending for specific projects. They received invitations through brands they are currently serving as ambassadors for.
While the presence of these actors is notable, Korean films have not made it to the competitive section this year. Nonetheless, director Jeong Yumi's short film 'Glasses' has been invited to the Critics' Week, and director Heo Ga-young's short film 'First Summer' has been selected for the Cinéfondation.
Additionally, Hong Sang-soo's name was included in the previously announced jury list, where he has been officially appointed as a jury member for the competitive section. Despite personal controversies, including his extramarital relationship with actress Kim Min-hee (김민희) and issues surrounding his divorce, Hong Sang-soo has a long-standing connection with the Cannes Film Festival. His role in this year's festival will be closely watched, especially given the absence of Korean films in the competition.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to May 24, local time.
