Strict Dress Code Imposed Ahead of the 78th Cannes Film Festival

The 78th Cannes Film Festival is generating buzz as it approaches its opening, particularly due to the newly implemented 'no exposure' rule. Although no Korean films have been invited to the competition section, acclaimed director Hong Sang-soo has been appointed as a jury member. Additionally, actors Kim Go-eun (김고은) and Han So-hee (한소희) will grace the red carpet, showcasing their presence at the prestigious event.
On May 12, the Cannes Film Festival's official website announced a revised dress code that will be strictly enforced this year. This new guideline prohibits excessive exposure not only on the red carpet but also in screening venues and various official events. Attire such as nude dresses, overly voluminous gowns, and excessively long dresses will also be restricted.
The festival organizers explained that this measure aims to clarify existing regulations based on French etiquette and to maintain the dignity of the festival.
This change in regulations is largely seen as a response to recent controversies surrounding celebrities' revealing outfits at award shows and film festivals. High-profile figures like Bianca Sensori and Bella Hadid have faced backlash for their sheer and revealing dresses, prompting Cannes to take preemptive action.
However, there is also criticism stemming from the local atmosphere that values freedom of expression, which contrasts with the artistic festival's emphasis on diverse forms of expression. As a result, all eyes are on the atmosphere of the Cannes opening ceremony.
At this year's festival, Kim Go-eun and Han So-hee will attend, not necessarily for their works but as ambassadors for brands that have received invitations to Cannes.
While the presence of these actors is notable, Korean films have not made it into the competition section this year. However, director Jeong Yumi's short film 'Glasses' has been invited to the Critics' Week, and director Heo Ga-young's short film 'First Summer' has been selected for the Cinéfondation.
Additionally, Hong Sang-soo's name was included in the previously announced jury list, where he has been officially appointed as a jury member for the competition section. Despite personal controversies, including his extramarital relationship with actress Kim Min-hee (김민희) and issues surrounding his divorce, Hong has a long-standing connection with the Cannes Film Festival. His role in this year's festival, amidst the absence of Korean films, is highly anticipated.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to May 24, local time.
