Squid Game Season 3 Maintains Global Popularity Amid Mixed Reviews

Despite receiving a mix of praise and criticism, the global popularity of Squid Game Season 3 (오징어 게임3) remains unwavering. Notably, it has garnered significant attention even in China, where illegal streaming is prevalent.

According to Flix Patrol, a global streaming platform ranking site, the Netflix original series Squid Game Season 3, which premiered on June 27, continues to hold the number one spot worldwide. It has achieved first place in 92 out of 93 countries, with Uruguay being the only exception. Until recently, it maintained the top position in all 93 countries, solidifying its dominance in the global TV show category.

In its first week, Squid Game Season 3 recorded an impressive 60,100,000 viewership count (calculated by dividing total viewing hours by the series' runtime) within just three days of its release, dominating the global TOP 10 and showcasing its immense popularity both domestically and internationally.

The series has not only topped the charts in South Korea but also in the United States, Japan, France, Brazil, and all other countries tracked by Netflix's TOP 10. This marks the first Netflix series to achieve number one in every country during its debut week, demonstrating its record-breaking success.

Additionally, it entered the ninth position among Netflix's all-time non-English series in its first week, with all three seasons of Squid Game now ranking within the top ten of Netflix's most popular non-English series. Furthermore, Season 2 and Season 1 also made a comeback in the global TOP 10, ranking third and sixth respectively, highlighting the series' continued appeal to fans worldwide.

While Squid Game is accessible in most countries, it remains unavailable in China. Nevertheless, over 21,000 reviews related to Squid Game Season 3 have been posted on Douban, China's largest review site, with participation from over 55,000 users in the rating system. This suggests that many viewers are illegally streaming the series and leaving reviews despite Netflix not being officially available in China.

Professor Seo Kyung-duk from Sungshin Women's University criticized the normalization of illegal streaming in China, stating, "It is astonishing that there is no sense of shame regarding this issue." He emphasized that it is time for Chinese authorities to take action against illegal activities and implement strict measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
