Squid Game Season 2 Misses Out on Golden Globe Win

Netflix's Squid Game Season 2 (오징어 게임 시즌2) faced disappointment at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards held on January 5, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The series was nominated for Best Television Series – Drama but lost to Disney+'s Shogun, which took home four awards including Best Drama Series, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.

The nomination of Squid Game 2 before its release garnered significant attention, marking a rare occurrence in Golden Globe history. Helen Hoen, CEO of the Golden Globes, highlighted the show's global resonance, stating that the voting body, comprised of members from various countries and cultural backgrounds, all connected with the series. Miko Saad, a member of the voting panel, praised Squid Game as a brilliant reimagining of childhood games into a brutal competition, which contributed to its worldwide popularity.

Despite the presence of director Hwang Dong-hyuk and lead actor Lee Jung-jae at the ceremony, the outcome was disappointing. In a recent interview, Hwang expressed that he had tempered his expectations for awards, noting, "Since the story was divided into two seasons, I thought the chances of winning were low because it’s not a complete narrative yet." He added, "It’s surprising to be nominated without having released the work. I think we might aim for something more in Season 3."

On the day of the awards, Hwang shared with Entertainment Tonight (ET), "I did my best not to disappoint the many expectations and interests. I’m still amazed at how much love there is for Korean-language works."

In 2022, the first season of Squid Game (오징어 게임) made history by winning the Golden Globe for Best Television Series and earned Lee Jung-jae a nomination for Best Actor and O Yeong-su for Best Supporting Actor, with O Yeong-su winning, making him the first Korean actor to achieve this honor. Although Season 2 aimed to build on that success, it faced tough competition, leading to heightened anticipation for the next season.

Production for Season 3 of Squid Game is underway, with a target release in the latter half of this year. Fans are eagerly looking forward to new challenges and intriguing storylines in the upcoming season.
