'Squid Game Season 2' Maintains Global Dominance Amid Controversy

'Squid Game Season 2' continues to hold the top spot globally despite mixed reactions regarding the participation of TOP, who has been embroiled in a marijuana controversy. According to FlixPatrol, an online content ranking service, the Netflix original series, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, has secured the number one position in the Netflix Global TOP 10. The series has achieved this feat across 93 countries, spanning continents from South America, including Argentina and Brazil, to North America, with Mexico and Canada, as well as Europe, including France and the UK, and Asia, including Turkey, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Since its premiere on December 26, 'Squid Game Season 2' has maintained its global number one ranking for six consecutive days starting December 27.
However, the overwhelming interest and viewership have not shielded the series from polarized opinions. Unlike the first season, which consisted of nine episodes, the second season has only seven episodes, leading to criticism that it is a subscription strategy designed to keep viewers engaged. Additionally, TOP's portrayal of the character Thanos, a 'drug-addicted rapper,' has sparked significant backlash in South Korea due to his recent controversies. In response, director Hwang Dong-hyuk defended TOP in an interview, stating that it took considerable courage for him to take on the role, given the negative parallels between the character and his real-life issues. Hwang also praised TOP's impressive performance, which has drawn both support and criticism.
'Squid Game Season 2' follows Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as he vows revenge and returns to participate in the deadly games, facing off against the Frontman (Lee Byung-hun) in a fierce battle. The entire seven-episode season was released on Netflix last month, captivating fans of the series.
