Squid Game 2 Misses Out on Golden Globe Win
The highly anticipated Netflix original series, Squid Game 2 (오징어 게임2), did not secure the Golden Globe for Best Television Series, losing out to Shogun (쇼군) at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards held on January 5, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Squid Game 2 was nominated in the Best Television Series – Drama category, competing against notable titles such as Disney+'s Shogun, Netflix's The Diplomat (외교관), Apple TV+'s Slow Horses (슬로 호시스), Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (미스터&미세스 스미스), and Peacock's Day of the Jackal (데이 오브 더 자칼). Despite the buzz surrounding its nomination, the series ultimately fell short against the strong contender, Shogun, which tells the story of a mysterious shipwreck in a Japanese village during the tumultuous era of the 1600s under the rule of Toranaga Yoshii.
Previously, the original Squid Game (오징어 게임) made history at the 79th Golden Globe Awards in January 2022, where Lee Jung-jae (이정재) was nominated for Best Actor and O Yeong-su (오영수) became the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe. After three years, the excitement surrounding Squid Game 2's nomination was palpable.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk (황동혁) and lead actor Lee Jung-jae made a striking appearance on the red carpet, showcasing their stylish black suits and exuding confidence in front of numerous media outlets, highlighting the strength of K-culture.
Since its release on December 26, 2024, Squid Game 2 has achieved remarkable success, topping the charts in 92 countries, including the United States, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Turkey, within just one day of its debut.
