Special Prosecutor Recommends Candidates for Kim Geon-hee Investigation

On June 16, 2025, Special Prosecutor Min Jung-ki, who is overseeing the investigation into allegations involving Kim Geon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, announced that he has recommended eight candidates for the position of special prosecutor's assistant to the presidential office. In a press release, Min stated that the recommendations were submitted around 11 PM on June 15. The Kim Geon-hee special investigation team can appoint four assistants under Min, who will lead the dispatched prosecutors and manage the investigation's practical aspects.

The Kim Geon-hee team was the first to disclose the recommendation of assistant candidates among the three special investigations, which also include the insurrection and Marine Corps investigations. The insurrection team, led by Special Prosecutor Jo Eun-seok, has been actively searching for office space over the weekend and has requested the Korean Bar Association to recommend assistant candidates by June 17. Meanwhile, Special Prosecutor Lee Myung-hyun, who is in charge of the Marine Corps investigation, is also meeting with potential candidates, but the overall selection process is still ongoing. Lee mentioned in a meeting with reporters that the selection of assistants is 'continuing.'

Once the assistant appointments are finalized, the Kim Geon-hee team is expected to discuss the selection of dispatched prosecutors with the prosecution.
