South Korean Government to Allow Return of Resigned Medical Residents in May

The South Korean government is reportedly set to permit the return of resigned medical residents (전공의) in May. This decision aims to open additional recruitment opportunities for residents later this month. On May 7, Health and Welfare Minister Cho Kyu-hong is expected to announce plans to actively consider measures for the return of these residents. However, details regarding special training exemptions related to military service are not anticipated to be included in this announcement.

Medical residents must return within three months to remain eligible for the specialist examination. Since training commenced in March, those who do not return by May will lose their chance to take the exam next year. Consequently, there is a growing sentiment among residents that they must return by May.

Typically, recruitment for medical residents occurs twice a year, in the first and second halves. The second round is usually held around July to August, prompting calls among residents for the government to request additional recruitment.

Im Jin-soo, a former planning director of the Korean Medical Association, has initiated a survey to gather opinions from residents. He noted, "If May passes, residents graduating from training hospitals will find it difficult to return and take the exam." The survey aims to gauge support for a May recruitment drive, following comments from Lee Jin-woo, president of the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, who stated that a justification is needed to persuade the government to accept a May recruitment.

The survey, which began on May 4, has reportedly seen participation from over 100 resigned residents, with around 80% indicating their willingness to return.
