The content of the book was indeed humorous for its time, featuring themes of beggars and thieves that mirrored the societal issues of the era. It is evident that Popeye dedicated significant effort to researching and crafting his humor.

As a college student, I once pondered whether some of his jokes, particularly those about historical figures like Mao Zedong, were too derogatory. It’s remarkable that such humor was possible during those tense times.

One joke that often comes to mind is about foreigners struggling with the Korean language. At the time, it seemed absurd, but now it reflects reality, as many people worldwide are learning Korean to enjoy K-pop and K-dramas. This humor was indeed ahead of its time.

Sadly, Lee Sang-yong, known as Popeye, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 81 on May 9. Hearing the news brought a deep sigh; another era has come to an end. The 9,000th surgery comes 32 years and 8 months after the first operation. Notably, the hospital set a record of 8,000 liver transplants just two and a half years ago in September 2022.

The overall survival rates for liver transplants at Seoul Asan Hospital are impressive, with 98% at one year, 90% at three years, and 89% at ten years. In comparison, the average one-year survival rate for liver transplants at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco, which have a longer history of liver transplants than South Korea, is around 92%, highlighting the hospital's excellence.

Professor Lee Seung-kyu, a chair professor in the Department of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Seoul Asan Hospital, emphasized that the driving force behind achieving 9,000 liver transplants is the patients. He noted, "Not only the liver transplant surgeons but also anesthesiologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, infectious disease specialists, pediatric surgeons, and many other medical professionals have worked as a 'one team' to ensure the long-term survival and quality of life for our patients."

He highlighted the distinct personalities of the three cast members, noting that Yoon Kyung-ho brings humor while also delivering delicious food. Kihyun remarked on his own ability to replicate recipes accurately and fulfill his role as the diligent maknae. Kihyun also mentioned their camaraderie, stating, "We ate a lot together. I played the role of the PT trainer, guide, and maknae. Ryu Soo-young commented on how fit I looked, even though I missed out on filming 'Sangtal.'"

Yoon Kyung-ho noted Kihyun's influence from MZ culture, sharing a humorous moment where Kihyun danced to the rhythm of music differently from the others. Kihyun added, "I once taught them how to wave for an hour and a half!"

Kihyun reflected on his experience as the youngest member, saying, "I’ve never been the maknae before, and it feels nice to be loved and cherished by the older members. It’s a new experience for me. He also shared his feelings about filming abroad after military service, expressing immense relief after being confined to the barracks for 18 months. The Supreme Court of South Korea has upheld prison sentences for a couple convicted of defrauding tenants out of 17 billion KRW in rental deposits in the Dongtan area. On May 15, the court's third division, led by Justice Lee Suk-yeon, confirmed the original sentences of 7 years and 3 years and 6 months for the couple, who were found guilty of fraud. The court stated that there were no errors in the lower court's judgment regarding the establishment of fraud and the principles of joint criminal liability.

From July 2020 to January 2023, the couple, identified as A and B, acquired and rented out 268 officetels using a 'no-capital gap investment' strategy. They were assisted by another couple, C and D, who acted as real estate agents and facilitated the rapid purchase of properties by introducing rental listings with existing deposits. Despite knowing they had no intention or ability to return the deposits, they misrepresented their financial situation and even borrowed money to appear solvent.

In the first trial, A and B received sentences of 12 years and 6 years, respectively, while C and D were sentenced to 12 years and 7 years. However, in the second trial, the sentences were reduced to 7 years and 3 years and 6 months for A and B, and 7 years and 4 years for C and D, taking into account the overlapping charges and efforts made to recover some losses by selling off certain properties.

NewJeans announced their independent activities last November after terminating their contract with their agency, ADOR. In response, ADOR filed for a court injunction to confirm the validity of the contract and prevent the members from signing new advertising deals. NewJeans cited 11 reasons for the contract termination, including the lack of production following the dismissal of former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin. However, the court did not accept their claims and granted ADOR's injunction. The members disagreed with the court's decision and filed an appeal, announcing their intention to halt activities.
