Son Heung-min Returns to Korea to Lead National Team in World Cup Qualifiers

On May 25, the Suwon World Cup Stadium hosted a crucial match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, where South Korea faced Jordan. Captain Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham) expressed disappointment after missing a key opportunity to score. Instead of heading directly to the Middle East from England to adjust his condition, Son chose to return to his homeland, demonstrating his commitment to the national team.
South Korea, aiming for its 11th consecutive World Cup appearance, will play Iraq in Basra on June 6, followed by a final match against Kuwait in Seoul on June 10. The top two teams from each group in the third round of qualifiers will secure direct tickets to the World Cup. Currently leading Group B, Coach Hong Myung-bo's team only needs a draw in either match to guarantee at least second place, but they must remain vigilant.
Son recently ended the 2024-2025 season on a high note, finally shaking off the 'trophy drought' by winning the UEFA Europa League, marking his first major trophy in 15 years since turning professional in 2010. With Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) leaving for a chance at glory, Son remained the only key player from the starting lineup, stating, "I stayed at Tottenham because I wanted to achieve what others couldn't," and he has now reaped the rewards of that decision.
After concluding the season with a match against Brighton on May 26, Son will join the national team on June 2, flying to Iraq on a chartered flight. He opted to return home on May 27 instead of joining the team immediately, ensuring he is in optimal condition for the upcoming matches. He missed the Brighton game to avoid aggravating a minor foot injury, a decision supported by Tottenham's manager, Ange Postecoglou.
When asked about his goals after the Europa League final against Manchester United, Son emphasized, "The most important thing is for the national team to qualify for the World Cup. My goal is always to grow and work hard with the team. I strive to be a player who faces difficult challenges head-on." He reiterated the importance of preparing well for the national team's upcoming challenges.
Son's return to Korea was met with a warm welcome from fans, who cheered and applauded as he arrived at the airport. He even participated in a 'champion ceremony,' proudly wearing his winner's medal at the request of his supporters. Coach Hong views Son as a vital asset for the national team, especially with several uncertainties surrounding the squad due to injuries and the end of the European season. Notably, key defender Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich) will miss the call-up due to injury, and other players from the English Championship have also been left out due to lack of match fitness. Despite concerns over Son's injury, Coach Hong confirmed that he received assurances about Son's fitness and plans to manage the team accordingly.
