SM Entertainment Becomes Major Stakeholder in 82MAJOR's Agency

SM Entertainment (SM) is set to acquire a significant stake in Great M Entertainment (그레이트엠), the agency behind the six-member boy group 82MAJOR (에이티투메이저). The acquisition will be finalized on May 27 through a share transfer agreement, with SM collaborating with Great M's CEO Kim Young-sun to foster the growth of 82MAJOR.

This investment highlights Kim's successful track record at FNC Entertainment and aligns with 82MAJOR's musical vision, which is expected to synergize with SM's multi-label strategy. This move marks the first instance of SM expanding its 'SM 3.0' strategy through external investment, transitioning to a system where various production centers and labels can independently develop and manage intellectual property (IP).

Founded in March 2020 by former FNC Entertainment executive Kim Young-sun, Great M Entertainment quickly began recruiting trainees and, after three years of preparation, debuted 82MAJOR on October 11, 2023. The group's name combines South Korea's country code, 82, with 'major,' reflecting their ambition to become a major player on the global stage.

82MAJOR showcases a hip-hop-based sound, with members actively participating in songwriting and composition. They made their mark in the global market by entering the Billboard charts just a year after their debut. Recently, they have been promoting their title track 'TAKEOVER' from their third mini-album, demonstrating strong live performance skills and expanding their fanbase. Their upcoming solo concert in Korea is already sold out, and they are set to embark on a North American tour this summer, solidifying their status as a 'global performance idol.'

Looking ahead, SM plans to continue diversifying its influence and revenue streams through acquisitions and investments in both domestic and international labels, enhancing musical diversity and experimentation.
